THE CIVIL WAR ANACONDA PLAN • This was the Union “Northern” plan to win the Civil War. • This plan was created by Union General Winfield Scott • This plan had three parts PART 1 DIVIDE THE SOUTH • Control the Mississippi River • This would prevent the Confederacy from being able to send supplies across the river PART 2 BLOCKADE THE COAST • The Union Navy would prevent the Confederacy from receiving outside help and sending supplies along the coast. • Also the blockade would prevent the south from sending crops to England to make money PART 3 CAPTURE THE CAPITOL • The goal for the Union army was to capture Richmond which was the capital of the Confederacy. • This would help lead to the surrender of the Confederate army BATTLE OF BULL RUN 1861 • This was the first major battle of the Civil War • This was a Confederate victory • This was the battle where Confederate General Thomas Jackson earned the nickname “Stonewall” for his bravery in battle BATTLE OF BULL RUN • The public watched this battle while enjoying a picnic • Both sides realized after this battle that the Civil War was going to last a lot longer then was originally thought • Most people thought the Civil War would only last a few months BATTLE OF ANTIETAM 1862 • There was no clear winner of this battle • The North claimed they won this battle so that they could issue the Emancipation Proclamation. • This battle lasted for only one day • This one day resulted in the most injuries and deaths in American history about 23,000 people BATTLE OF ANTIETAM • Here are important spots from the battlefield: • The Cornfield: Both armies battled for control of this important part of the battlefield • Burnsides Bridge: The Union Army crossed a bridge while the Confederate solders waited and attacked them. • Bloody Lane: The Confederate Army waited on the high ground for the Union Army to attack across the lane. EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION • This document freed the slaves in the Confederate States only • This meant that if the Union Army won the war slavery would quickly end in the south This document changed the purpose of the Civil War. The Civil War is now a war to preserve the Union AND End slavery Impact of the Emancipation Proclamation • The original purpose for the Civil War for the Union soldiers was to keep the country united • The Emanc Proc changed the purpose of the Civil War • The new purpose of the Civil War was now to END SLAVERY and preserve the union THE BATTLE OF FREDERICKSBURG • Lincoln picked a new General in charge Burnside. • Burnside waited for pontoon bridges to arrive before he started his attack • This was the first Civil War battle that took place in the streets of a town • The Confederate Army had a strong defensive position to stop the Union attack IMPACT BATTLE OF FREDERICKSBURG • The Confederate Army won the battle of Fredericksburg because of their strong defensive position • Robert E Lee gained increased confidence in his army because of the victory • Lincoln replaced Burnside as commander because he lost the battle. Battle of Chancellorsville • This battle is Robert E Lee’s greatest victory in the Civil War • The Confederate army was outnumbered 2 to 1 and still won this battle • The Confederate army was divided in half to confuse the Union army about where the attack would take place. Death of Stonewall • Confederate general Stonewall Jackson died from the wounds he received at this battle • He was wounded on accident by Confederate Soldiers • Jackson returned from scouting the Union army and was shot when he returned back to the Confederate army
