February 1862 General US Grant takes over • Grant wins battles in Tennessee at Fort Henry and Fort Donelson • Grants earns the nickname “Unconditional Surrender” February 1862 General US Grant takes over April 6th & 7th 1862 Battle of Shiloh • Shiloh is a Hebrew word meaning “place of peace” • 1st day of battle – Confederates led by General Albert Sydney Johnston push the Union back April 6th & 7th 1862 Battle of Shiloh • 2nd day of battle – Union General Grant is reinforced by Buell and the Union reclaims the battlefield.
