Understanding Achievement Standard

Examine individual or group identity
in an historical setting, in an essay.
This essay requires you to write an essay
examining factors that have contributed to the
formation of the identity of an individual or
group, ways in which this identity was
expressed and the characteristics of the
individual or group.
Understanding the criteria
There are three important criteria in this standard:
• Explaining factors that contributed to the
individual’s/group’s identity, and the ways in
which this identity was evident
• Explaining characteristics of the individual’s/
group’s identity
• Writing in an appropriate essay format ((brief
introduction, a body consisting of structured,
sequenced paragraphs, a conclusion)
Analysing this standard
• It is clear that a question can only be asked about
an individual OR a group
• Your explanation should NOT be just a biography
of the individual or a general history of the group.
• Your explanation must focus on factors that
helped to make the individual’s/group’s identity
distinctive, AND ways in which the
individual/group acted, AND characteristics of
the individual’s/group’s identity
Understanding the key words
• “Factors” refers to those background influences
that you explain what made a person or group
distinctive. These factors could include their
heritage, attitudes, values, beliefs, shared
experiences.
• “Ways the identity was expressed” refers to
actions or decisions taken by a person or group in
an historical context.
• “Characteristics” refers to the type of person or
group.

Preparing for this standard
• Although it is theoretically possible for you to use any
person or group from the course this year, in practice, it is
more likely that you will choose from either Russia or
Vietnam topics.
• You need to prepare for at least ONE individual AND
ONE group for each of these topics in order to be
confident that you can attempt this standard with success.
• For both the chosen individual and the group, set up a set
of separate revision notes.
• Use a combination of class notes, information from
textbooks, advice from your teacher and other information
to develop these revision notes.
Preparing for this standard
Structure your revision notes around the
following headings
• Factors influencing the individual’s/group’s
identity
• Ways the individual/group acted to show
their distinctive identity
• Characteristics of the individual’s/group’s
identity
Preparing for this standard
• class-based essays using the Understand, Plan,
Structure, Check approach
• Use the result of the October examination as an
opportunity to identify areas in your knowledge
or technique that need to be improved
• Improve the detail or accuracy of the revision
notes
• Keep revising these notes until you can
reproduce them accurately on a planning grid
that will be provided as part of the examination
booklet.
