Nonvascular plants
Two Groups of Plants
 Vascular plants: contain vascular tissue
that transports water and nutrients.
 Nonvascular plants: do not have a
vascular system. They rely on water
coming to them.
Nonvascular Plants
 Do not have
vascular tissue…
 low growing
(close to the
ground)…
 Don’t have true
roots,
 …but, they are
anchored to the
ground by small
root like
structures.
Nonvascular Plants
 They have parts that look like stems, but
they are not true stems.
 They also have small leaf like structures
that make food
 –These are neither true stems nor leaves
because they don’t have a vascular
system.
Nonvascular Plants
 Nonvascular plants absorb water and
nutrients from around them.
 Water in the plants carry the nutrients
directly from cell to cell.
 Since, nonvascular plants don´t have a
vascular system, they cannot grow tall.
Nonvascular Plants
 Their small size allows them to absorb
and carry enough water and nutrients to
each cell easily.
 When there isn’t enough water, the plant
turns brown.
 When it rains, it will turn green again.
Vascular Plants
 have vascular tissue:
tissue that moves food
and nutrients around
plant.
 have leaves, stems, and
roots.
 produce food for plant
only in leaves.
