small?
Nonvascular plants are small because they
do not have a transport system that allows
water to move to high branches.
 What do all plants need?
All plants need space, air, water, sunlight
and carbon dioxide.
 What is a vascular system?
A vascular system is a system of hollow
tubes.
 Describe seed plants.
Gymnosperm – does not flower
Pine and any cone bearing trees
Angiosperm – flowers
Apples, plums and grasses
 Spores
1. Single cell that makes new plants
2. Strong outer covering that helps to
protect until it finds its home
3. Seedless plants that produce a new
exact plant
 What is a root?
A part of the plant that absorbs water and minerals,
stores food and anchors the plant.
 What is the job of a root hair?
Soaks up moisture
 What is a root cap?
Covers the tip of the root and protects the root tip
 What is the job of the epidermis layer of the root?
Has root hairs and absorbs water
 What is the job of the cortex layer of a root?
Stores food and nutrients
 Describe and draw a fibrous root.
Thin branching roots that do not grow deep in the
ground
 Describe and draw an aerial root.
Never touched the ground,
anchors plants to trees and rocks
absorbs water from rain
 Describe and draw a prop root.

 Would you expect a desert plant or
a swamp plant to have more root hairs.
