Essential Question:

How do cells differ among living
organisms?
Agenda:
1. Practice Selected Response Question
2. View examples of cells
3. What makes a cell a cell?
4. Prokaryotic vs. Eukaryotic cells
Gibberellic Acid (GA) is a hormone that affects the
growth of plants. A Student predicted that the
spraying gibberellic acid solution on corn plants
would increase their rate of growth. To test this
hypothesis, he planted a corn plant and sprayed
the same amount of gibberellic acid solution on
it every day for one week. At the end of the
week, he found that the corn plant had grown
seven centimeters. Based on this observation,
he concluded that gibberellic acid had caused
the plant to grow faster
What would gibberelic acid be considered in this
experiment?
A. Experimental Group
B. Independent Variable
C. Control Group
D. Dependent Variable

Cells pre-assessment
Plants and animals do have
many characteristics in common

Halophiles (left) love salty conditions
that easily kill other organisms
Thermophiles (right) love very hot
conditions that easily kill other
Cell Theory



The basis of this theory is that all life is
made of cells.
Could life exist without cells?
Its “just a theory” (like the atom or
gravity). What does this mean?
Lily Cell
Human Liver Cell
(Kingdom Plantae) (Kingdom Animalia)
Some cells have structures that
allow them to move

Even human cells can MOVE!
Prokaryotes do not have a
nucleus
Proprionibacterium acnes
The eubacteria which causes acne is a single
celled organism.
Human red blood cells, platelets,
and white blood cells
(Animalia Kingdom)
Acetabularia is very big and you
can see it without a microscope

But Acetabularia is still a singlecelled organism.
