What does the word propaganda mean, and
what does it have to with reading?
Propaganda is the use of ideas, information,
language, and rumors to win the reader over to
a cause or to hurt an opposing cause.
*In propaganda, the author tells only the side
he/she wants people to know.
*Propaganda appeals with emotions rather than
intellect.
Propaganda
Techniques used to influence opinions,
emotions, attitudes or behavior.
The purpose is to benefit the sponsor.
It appeals to the emotions not the intellect.
It can be negative or positive.
The purpose is to persuade.

• Bandwagon:
• a persuasive technique that invites you to join
the crowd
• “Everybody’s doing it!”

• Famous person endorses a product, idea, or
person
• Musicians, artists, sports, actors/actresses

• A catchword or phrase loaded with emotion;
often sells through repetition

• A way of smearing the opponent; intent is to
damage opponent
• Used by politicians and product companies
