political and socialist economic theories of
Vladimir Lenin.

These were more totalitarian then
communism
Extensive national organization.
 Forced membership in political, athletic,
and national groups.
 Secret Police.
 Terror.

politics, and society.
 Felt that revolution, even violence, was
necessary in order to secure peace.
 Many fought against Lenin so Lenin began
the “Red Terror”.

Red Terror

executions conducted by the Bolshevik
government.
 800 alleged enemies had been shot and
another 6,229 imprisoned.
 Casualties in the first two months were
between 10,000 and 15,000.

Civil War
Russia soon broke into a civil war between
the Red Army and the White Army
(supported by anti-communist countries).
 Such as Canada and USA. (financially not
Physically)
 By 1922, other countries joined Russia and
formed the USSR.

Effect on people
Land was given to people.
 Factories were given to workers.
 Equality.

Unless, he didn’t like you!
Famine

Lenin would use starvation, Poverty, and
force to ensure that people followed him.

This came to an abrupt end with Lenin’s
death in 1924 from a stroke.

The Change
Let’s Get Started
Lenin gave the working people a lot of
freedom.
 Unless you went against him!
 However, Lenin’s rule ended abruptly
when he died in 1924.


Strangely enough, the people liked him
and asked to have his body kept!
Really…
But, we have someone new!
When Lenin died, the USSR started a new
form of Communism.
 Under Joseph Stalin, it was called
Stalinism?
 Why might is be called Stalinism?

Stalinism
Political ideology based on Soviet dictator
Stalin.
 Characterized by totalitarian rule and
repression of political opponents.

Coming to Power
Stalin fought for the leadership.
 He finally had his opponent deported and
finally assassinated in Mexico.

Once he came to power, He changed the
idea of socialism based on Freedom and
Equality.
 It become one based on Fear and
Oppression.

He did some strange

The Creation of Gulag (Prison Camps)
 Use of secret police.
 Purged all political enemies.
 Collectivization of all farms.
 Creates a series of 5 year plans.
 Changing Russian History to show a
communist past.

He Rejected
All Capitalism.
 Individual Freedoms.
 All opposing political parties.

He also is known for the Ukraine Famine.
Later on
After Stalin, the Cold War, and other
leaders.
 Russia became a Perestroika, a liberal
democracy.


We will get into the cold war later.
That’s it…
