Energy
Learning Target: I will be able to define what energy is.
Learning target: I can state the unit to measure energy.
Learning target: I can give the correct definition of work.
Learning Target: I can solve work problems
100,000 J
Or
100kj
Learning Target: I can solve work problems
Calculation practice formative
Learning target: I can correctly define the term power.
Learning target: I can state the unit used to measure power.
Learning target: I can solve equations for power.
POWER LAB
Learning target: I will be able to explain how machines
make work easier.
150 x 3
IMA = LENGTH ÷ HEIGHT
IMA =

IMA = 3

Learning target: Simple machines increase mechanical advantage.
The more complex the pulley… The greater the mechanical advantage
Learning target: Simple machines increase mechanical advantage.
What did you notice about the amount of
wire you had to use as you made the
pulleys more complicated?
LARGE FORCE……………SHORT DISTANCE
SMALL FORCE……………LARGE DISTANCE
FxD = FxD
YOU CANNOT CHANGE
THE WORK THAT
NEEDS TO GET DONE!
There are three classes of lever…
Learning target: I can explain how machines
make work easier.
Where does
it all come
from?
Learning target: I will be able to give examples of common
forms of energy.
All energy in our
solar system
starts with our
sun
Is there only 1
type of energy?
No!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There are many
Sound
Light
Motion
Heat
Gravitational
Thermal
Nuclear
Electrical
Chemical
Stored mechanical
Radiant
They all fall into
two categories:
Potential &
Kinetic
Kinetic is
movement
energy
Potential is
stored energy
Potential can be
changed into
kinetic and kinetic
to potential.
Learning target: I can give examples of common forms of energy.
Law of conservation of
energy
• Energy cannot be created
or destroyed only changed
from one form to the
other.
Learning target: I will be able to describe energy transfers and
transformations.
Energy transfer is the transfer of
energy from one thing to another.
Kinetic to kinetic
Energy transformation/change :- is when energy
is changed into another form.
Gravitational potential to
Kinetic and sound and
heat.
Anything that can generate
movement can make electricity!
Renewable??
Non Renewable???
Inexaustable /
sustainable???
Energy Resource Diagrams
For this assignment you
will show how an energy
resource starts/started
with the sun………
..and ends with
the production of
electricity.
You will need
to make a
neat,
colored
drawing with
descriptions.
You should include all of the
important s-t-e-p-s along the way.
The following example
cannot be used.
Fossil Fuels
Millions of years ago plants
and trees used energy from
the sun to grow.
The plants and/or animals were buried
by sediments. Through the action of
heat and pressure over millions of
centuries, they were
chemically
changed. Coal, oil,
and natural gas are
the results.
At the power plant the coal is burned
to heat water
into steam. This
steam is used
to turn a
turbine.
As the
turbine
turns the
generator,
electricity
is
produced.
Electricity
is then sent
to your
home for
your use!
You may choose from the
following list of resources…
Wind
Solar
Tidal
Wave
Biomass
Hydroelectric-water
Learning target: I will be able to LINK all sources of
energy back to the sun.
Nuclear Energy
Learning target: I will be able to simply describe nuclear fission and nuclear fusion.
I will be able to evaluate both the positive and negative impact of
nuclear energy.
To get started go to my webpage and there are some
links that may help…….
YOU ARE WELCOME 
Nuclear Fusion
In nuclear physics, nuclear fusion is
anuclear reaction in which two or more
atomic nuclei collide at a very high speed
and join to form a new type of atomic
nucleus. During this process, matter is not
conserved because some of the matter of
the fusing nuclei is converted to photons
(energy).
