I. The Appendicular Skeleton A. Appendicular skeleton 1. Bones that make up the appendicular skeleton are those of the appendages 2. Includes the pectoral and pelvic girdles and the upper and lower extremities B. Pectoral Girdle 1. The pectoral girdle or the shoulder girdle attach the upper extremities to the axial skeleton 2. Consists of two bones: the clavicle and the scapula a. Clavicle (collar bone) a long slender, S shaped bone with two curves 1. Medial 1/3 is convex anteriorly and lateral 1/3 is concave 2. Lies superior and anterior to the thorax and superior to the first rib 3. Medial end attaches by the sternoclavicular joint to the sternum 4. Lateral end attaches to scapula by the acromioclavicular b. Scapula (shoulder blade) large triangular flat bone in the posterior of the thorax between the second and seventh ribs 1. Has a spine that runs diagonally across posterior a. End of the spine becomes the acromion which attaches to the clavicle 2. Inferior to the acromion is a depression called the glenoid cavity which is the shoulder joint 3. The scapular notch allows passage of the supra scapular nerve 4. Has many fossae for muscle attachment
