Instructions To Run Simulations for 8.02 on DebAthena Machines
(For Java Applets)
1. Launch Firefox and goto web.mit.edu/viz/EM and use the links to navigate to the appropriate
simulation.
2. Click on Start Simulation.
3. A window should open that starts with “You have chosen to open...”:
• In this window, Click on the checkbox that says:
[x] Do this automatically for files like this from now on.
• In this window, under Open with, click on the pop-up menu and select Other….
4. At the top left corner of the resulting dialog window, click on:
• the icon that looks like a hard drive
• the icon that looks like a pencil (this will allow you to type a path to the Java Web Start
application)
5. In the text box labeled Location, type the following path:
afs/athena.mit.edu/software/java/current/bin/javaws
6. Click OPEN (it will then download the java simulation file, start the Java Virtual Machine and popup a dialog box)
7. Click OK in the next Dialog Box 8. {skip this step if this dialog box doesn’t appear} The resulting Dialog box will say "The applications digital signature cannot be verified. Do you want to run the application?"
• In this Dialog Box, click on the check box
[x] Always trust content from this publisher. (http://starapp.mit.edu)
• Click RUN
You should only have to do Steps 1-8 once. Once the javaws has been chosen for your first simulation, it
will be there by default for the others. However, if for some reason it isn't there, run through Steps 1-8
again.
NOTE: To modify/UNDO this behavior, in Firefox goto Menu View>Preferences>Applications,
scroll down to (or search for) ‘JNLP file’. In the pop-up menu beside ‘JNLP file’ select ‘Always Ask’
