Example • Suppose your score is the 60% percentile of a SAT test. Covariance - is there any pattern to the way two variables move together? If the two variables move in opposite directions, (one increases when the other one decreases), the covariance is a large negative number. If the two variables are unrelated, the covariance will be close to zero.
