Bell Questions 2/2/10
1. What characteristics do geologists use to
identify rocks?
2. What are the 3 main groups of rocks?
Igneous Rocks
• Classified by Origin, Texture, and
Composition
Origin
• Extrusive rock – formed from lava that
erupted onto Earth’s surface (Basalt)
• Intrusive rock – Magma hardened beneath
earth’s surface (granite)
Texture
• Fine-grained – Extrusive, rapidly cooling
(Rhyolite)
• Coarse-grained – Intrusive (Granite)
• No grains – Obsidian or volcanic glass
Mineral composition
• Light-colored, intermediate-colored, darkcolored
• High silica is light colored
• Low silica is dark colored
Uses of Igneous Rocks
• Building materials – Granite for buildings,
basalt is crushed to make gravel
• Pumice – cleaning and polishing
• Obsidian – Sharp tools
