Challenges: climate change
Identified impacts of climate change either expected or
already observed for water supply and sanitation
systems
Water supply:
• Surface water availability
• Change in run-off patterns and surface water quality
• Groundwater availability (decreased natural
recharge)
• Saline intrusion in groundwater in coastal area
• Changing demand patterns, land use (temperature,
crop)
• Flooding of well field
• Bio-growth in distribution network
• Treatment efficiency
Sanitation:
• Extreme precipitation (sustainable drainage, CSO,
increased storage, WWTP)
• Salt water intrusion

System Performance
Climate Change Adaptation strategy
Performance declines over time due to
external influences and asset deteoriation
Knowledge about
Climate Change
Performance standard
Incremental adaptation responses
Large investment
in infrastructure
Time
More rapid change in external
drivers than anticipated will
after a few years result in more
rapid decline in performance

What are the links between PREPARED and EU policy?
Prepared enabling change
27
Policy related issues (1)
1.• GWD implementation in Member States
) can cause
barriers to MAR & dune infiltration for underground
storage and water quality improvement.
2. WFD pricing policy for water in some Member States will
cause barrier to sustainable water use (selling price lower
than production cost).
3. DWD inclusion of RA/RM concept would boost WCSP
approach.
Prepared enabling change
28
Policy related issues (2)
4. UWWTD and BWD drivers behind
investments urban water cycle
Stricter national standards will
increase investment needs (CSO).
5. BWD allows the use of EWS for
overflows in receiving waters.
6. Infiltration of residual waste from
desalination in the ground.
