climate change, Uusimaa
case study
ASTRA Conference Gdansk
26th – 28th October 2006

What is eutrophication?
series of interlinked processes:
excess input or production of
nutrients and organic matter
enrichment
stimulates the
growth of algae
far-reaching
effects
direct hazard
imbalanced functioning
of the system
(HELCOM, FIMR)
Baltic Sea and eutrophiction

Climate change and the
Eutrophication...
Climate Change most probably will affect the
eutrophication in the Baltic Sea
The relationship is nevertheless very complicated and
the consequences are hard to predict
Statistical analysis to confirm
the connection!
To show how the parameters that characterise
eutrophication (chlorophyll-a content, oxygen
content/saturation) can be explained by
oceanographical and nutrient parameters which will
be directly influenced by climate change
and by such mean to prove that trophic status of the
sea depends on climate change as well.
Multiple regression analysis
(1)
Data from the
SYKE
database, sea
stations for
Uusimaa
region, Gulf of
Finland, Finland
61 stations
from 1.9.1995
till 31.8.2006
from 15 up to 249 measurements per station in total
Multiple regression analysis

Parameters:
• Oxygen content, oxygen saturation, temperature,
salinity total phosphorus, total nitrogen, trubidity,
chlorophyll-a
Tool: SPSS
