To acquaint the student with valid diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to the most
common infectious disease syndromes. To develop familiarity with antimicrobial agents
and knowledge of services provided by the microbiology laboratory.
1. Proficiency in diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to infectious diseases
2. Proficiency in the basic laboratory skills pertinent to infectious diseases
3. Proficiency in the interpretation of data from the clinical microbiology laboratory
4. Proficiency in the management of HIV infection and AIDS
The student will be an active participant in the consultative service of the ID section,
thus gaining direct experience with a variety of infectious diseases. The student, through
didactic and less formal instruction, will be provided with insight into general and
specific approaches to the diagnosis and therapy of infectious diseases. The student will
gain exposure to the capabilities of the clinical microbiology laboratory by participating
in nearly daily ‘plate rounds’ and will gain an appreciation of those procedures
complementing routine bacteriology. The student will be an active participant in the
weekly clinical conference.
