GLOBALIZATION AND GLOBAL TRADE PATTERNS LEARNING GOAL 4: COMPARE GLOBAL TRADE PATTERNS OVER TIME AND EXAMINE HOW GLOBALIZATION HAS AFFECTED SOCIETIES AT DIFFERENT LEVELS OF DEVELOPMENT. GLOBAL HISTORY OF CHINA 500’s 1300’s silk exported from China to the Mediterranean gunpowder travels from China to Europe 1800’s tea, porcelain exported from China to Europe 1900’s manufactured goods exported from China China has always been a part of globalization of markets!!!! MIDDLE EAST- THE WORLDS CROSSROAD The Middle East stands at the crossroads of three continents: Africa, Asia and Europe. Since ancient times it has developed major trade routes over land and sea WHAT IS BLUE, A QUARTER OF A MILE LONG, AND TALLER THAN LONDON'S OLYMPIC STADIUM? The newest container ship, the Triple E Large volumes of goods are produced in Asia and then consumed in Europe and the US. Many worry these giant ships are symbols of the world's trade imbalance CHANGING TRADE PATTERNS (IMPACTS): ECONOMIC -Trade organization increase region growth/ diversity -Overall increasing interdependence ENVIRONMENTAL -Increased industrialization/ trade has led to increased pollution (air & water) -Allowed for more technology that shapes the environment Examples: dams and agriculture equip. SOCIAL - Global trade has speed up cultural diffusion & convergence. -Economic benefits have increased standard of living in newly industrialized nations Example: China FREE TRADE ZONES Due to increased global interactions free trade zones have become more common FTZ- a designated area that eliminates traditional trade barriers, such as tariffs, and minimizes bureaucratic regulations Benefits Attracts new buisness Maximized savings Minimized company cost Challenges bidding wars sometimes erupt between competing governments MEDICAL ADVANCEMENTS (IMPACTS): ECONOMIC -Healthier more skilled workers -Improves economic production ENVIRONMENTAL -Growing populations - Expansion into fragile environments SOCIAL - Increased life expectancy -Decreased infant mortality rate Decrease in infectious disease etc. ACTIVITY Directions: Using this link answer the questions that follow in your student notebook.
