the Lord's sake…

−Rebel
−Deny
−Submit to Christ
Review
Hardship is always an opportunity for:
−Our growth
−God's glory
• Key- how I handle it

covenant"
"May this happen to me if I break this
covenant"
Context
A covenant involves the whole person,
binding 2 parties together in
permanent and unconditional unity
Covenant is action, not expectation
Covenants take priority over every
other human relationship
Headship and mutual submission mark

The Bible and Equality
There is neither Jew nor Greek,
there is neither slave nor free,
there is no male and female, for
you are all one in Christ Jesus
- Gal. 3:28
Supporters, Witnesses, Deacons,
Prophetess'
Likewise, wives, be subject to your
own husbands, so that even if
some do not obey the word, they
may be won without a word by the
conduct of their wives, when they
see your respectful and pure
conduct
Who is the written to?
…Likewise (in the same way)
−Human authority
−Bondservants and masters
• To this you were called, because
Christ suffered for you, leaving you
an example, that you should follow
in his steps…
Be subject= hypotassomenai- a
continuing attitude of willful
subordination of one’s desires,
wants and needs to another
• Others-centered
First reason to serve: husband's need
for faith
…so that even if some do not obey
the word, they may be won
without a word by the conduct of
their wives
The gospel should be evident in both
words and actions. The nature of
covenant relationships demands
action over words
Wives give wordless sermons
…when they see your respectful and
pure conduct
Respectful= phobos- fear. Of whom?
Second reason to serve: headship
For the husband is the head of the
wife even as Christ is the head of
the church, his body, and
is himself its Savior. Now as the
church submits to Christ, so also
wives should submit in everything
to their husbands- Eph. 5:23-24
Headship
How does Christ treat the church?
Headship
Who sinned in the garden?
Headship
Who sinned in the garden?
Who did God call? Why?
Headship
What does that mean for men
today?
Now as the church submits to Christ,
so also wives should submit in
everything to their husbands
Everything?
Everything?

Set free to be beautiful
Do not let your adorning (beauty) be
external- the braiding of hair and
the putting on of gold jewelry, or
the clothing you wear…
…but let your adorning (beauty)
be the hidden person of the heart
with the imperishable (unfading)
beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit,
which in God’s sight is very
precious (great worth)
The intended audience should
determine a woman’s view of
beauty
What determines how we view
feminine beauty today?
What determines how we view
feminine beauty today?
• Media: TV, Magazines, Movies,
Computer
• Men
• Other women
• Involves:
•
•
•
•
Lips
Hair
Eyes
Body
• Shape
• Size
• Proportion
• Leads to:
• Comparison
• Feelings of inadequacy
• Great expense and time
• Leads to:
• Never feeling like you “measure up”
• Resentment
• Pressuring daughters to do the same
• In the extreme, cutting, eating
disorders and surgery
Could it be that this view of beauty
is wrong?
Your beauty should not come from
outward adornment…(NIV)
Who is your audience?
If it’s other men, what does that say
about me?
If it’s other women- trying to make
them jealous- what does that say
about me?
Who is your audience?
What should they see?
the hidden person of the heart with
the imperishable beauty of a
gentle and quiet spirit
−Gentle- humble, nothing to prove
−Quiet- peaceable
(cf. Prov. 25:24; 11:22)
I want you to want me
Pressure to conform= "accept me"
Choosing to serve= "accept Jesus"
Charm is deceptive, and beauty is
fleeting; but a woman who fears
the LORD is to be praised
- Proverbs 31:30
Some beautiful women are very ugly
−And a man who loves Jesus is
looking for more than external
beauty
−If he's not…find a different guy
• Hidden person of the heart
- “concealed heart”
• If the heart is right, the actions will
be right
…which in God’s sight is very
precious…
True worth or value is determined
by God, not by men, other women
or even society. And the monetary
cost is…nothing
"My wife is the standard of beauty
by which all other women are
measured"
• And they all fall short by
comparison
For this is how the holy women who
hoped in God used to adorn
themselves…
…by submitting to their own
husbands, as Sarah obeyed
Abraham, calling him lord. And you
are her children, if you do good
and do not fear anything that is
frightening
Do good- serve, respect, let your
beauty come: from inside, for God
and your husband
Applying make-up means growing in/
following God and respecting
husbands
…if you do good and do not fear
anything that is frightening
• Of whom? Why?
Mother-in-law
Takeaways:
• Can I serve Jesus by serving my
husband?
• Does covenant describe our
marriage? Why or why not?
Takeaways:
• Who is my primary audience?
Why?
• Where does my sense of beauty
and worth come from? Do I need
to make a change starting today?
Will I?
Takeaways:
• “Nothing to prove,” “peaceable”
Would those who know me best
describe me that way? Why or
why not?
