Teacher Notes:
This game of countdown is played in the same way as
the TV series, but please be liberal about the amount of
time allowed.
Students are to get as close as possible to the ‘target
number’ (the number at the top of the board in green)
using only the six other numbers given underneath on
blue cards.
They may only use each number once (they could not
use it at all if they didn’t want to) and may only use the
mathematical operations of +, -, x and ÷.
They may NOT combine a 3 and a 4 to give 34 or 43.
A
Answers:
There are many different possible correct solutions.
This is one: (2+4) x 10 x 4 = 6 x 40 = 240
B
Answers:
There are many different possible correct solutions.
This is one: (10 ÷ 5) x 8 x (10 + 6) = 2 x 8 x 16 = 16 x
16 = 256
C
Answers:
There are many different possible correct solutions.
This is one: 50 x (10 + 5) + 3 + 2 = 50 x 15 + 5 = 750 +
5 = 755
A
Answers:
There are many different possible correct solutions.
This is one: 50 x 4 – 8 + 3 = 200 - 5 = 195
B
Answers:
There are many different possible correct solutions.
This is one: 100 x 4 + 50 – 2 – 1 = 400 + 47 = 447
C
Answers:
There are many different possible correct solutions.
This is one: (9 – 8 + 75 + 25) x 4 = 101 x 4 = 404
