Electronics Moisture Tester The project – research/brief/specification Electronic theory Resistance The Engineer Making a circuit soldering Objectives Write a design brief and specification which reflects the use of a moisture tester. Task outcome Develop a mood board Using the mood board to brainstorm ideas. Write a design brief Develop a specification. Content list BACKGROUND TO PROJECT The circuit you are going to make will detect if something is wet (has enough moisture), it detects a change in the amount of moisture present. You can use this circuit in a number of different situation where moisture/water is present. Think about when you would want to know if something is too dry. Content list Using the internet produce a mood board of images that you could use your moisture detector for. Here are a few to get you started. Content list The electronic product that you will build can detect a CHANGE in the amount of moisture present. Use your mood board to help you complete the mind map below with possible uses for this idea. Cat needs more milk in bowl Moisture Tester Content list • Design Brief • I am going to design and manufacture a product which can be used to _____________________________ ________. My product will be used by __________________ in order to____________________________ . The location in which I expect my product to be used is ______________________. Content list • Specification • • • • • • • • • Your specification should detail all the things that your product should be able to do or should have. My product should be able to detect a change in moisture level My product should be powered by ___________________. My product should look _____________________________. My product should be safe and therefore _________________________. Try to think of three other points to add to your Specifications ________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ Content list Objectives Explain how a simple circuit works and the purpose of the components in the circuit. Task outcome Draw out a simple circuit and explain how it works. Explain how insulators and conductors work and their function in a circuit. Content list So what is a Circuit?… A circuit is something that electricity flows around. It is the same for electricity. If the circuit is broken, the electricity cannot get around the track and nothing will happen, ie, the light wont come on. It is a bit like a race track the track must be complete for the car to get round, otherwise, it cant go any further. Content list The plastic part of the switch is an insulator. No electrons can get past. The metal part of the switch is a conductor. The electrons can get through when the switch is closed. The electrons will not do anything unless they are pushed. This is where they get the push or potential. Content list The electrons are heading for the bulb when they pass through the bulb they give off energy which they got from the battery. They must however get rid of all the energy before they return to the battery. If they started with 9V then they have to get rid of the 9V in the bulb. They must have 0V on leaving the bulb. What do you think would happen if the voltage was increased to 100V? Use crocodile clips to find out. The resistor protects the LED if the battery is to large. Led’S are very small delicate lights. They come in different colours and only draw a small amount of current so the battery last a long time. Content list Content list Objectives Select the correct resistor using a multi meter and colour code. Task outcome Develop a colour code chart Using the chart to work out the resistance of a selection of resistors Explain how a multi meter works Use the multi meter to determine the value of a selection of resistors. Content list Resistors… Content list • Resistors are used to control the flow of electricity around a circuit. • Resistors are measured in Ohms (Ω), and there are lots of different values. Content list Resistor Colour Codes Black 0 Brown 1 Red 2 Orange 3 Yellow 4 Green 5 Blue 6 Violet 7 Grey 8 Content list White 9 1. Print this page 2. Colour each disc as indicated 3. Cut out the discs 4. Make a hole in the centre of each disc 5. Stack the discs and fasten together Content list Objectives Soldering Task outcome http://year9moisturetester.wikispaces.com/ Content list Objectives Explain the need for Engineers and the moral responsibility that Engineers have. Task outcome Produce a leaflet that explains the role of five different types of Engineering. Produce a poster that reflects the good work that Engineers do. Produce a poster that reflects on the products that Engineers have design that cause harm to mankind. Content list What do Engineers do? Content list Objectives Use YENKA to design and test electronic circuits. Task outcome Content list
