Noun
• Names a person, place, thing or idea
• Two types of nouns (common and
proper)
• Common- any noun that doesn’t name
something specific
• Proper – Gives the specific name of a
noun
Verb
• Three types of verbs
– Action (expresses a physical or mental
action)
– Linking (links the subject of a sentence
to a word in the predicate)
– Helping or Auxiliary (combined with
verbs to form the verb phrase)
Action Verbs
• Transitive vs. Intransitive
– Transitive Verbs (appear with a direct
object or a person or thing receiving an
action)
– Intransitive Verbs (Does not have a
direct object)
Adjective
• Modifies a noun
• Descriptive words
• Gives more information about the noun

Adverb
• Modifies the verb, an adjective or
other adverbs
• Describes the verb, an adjective or
other adverbs
• Generally end in ly
Pronoun
• Another name for a noun
• Ex. (he, she, him, her, them, they, it,
we, our)
Conjunction
• Joins two thoughts or sentences
together
• Not always in the middle of the
thought or sentence, can be in the
beginning or end
Preposition
• Shows the relationship between a
noun or pronoun and another word in
the sentence
• Can answer the question where?
• Anything that can be done to a cloud
