Parts of Speech Though not many of us will grow up to be grammar kings and queens, it is extremely important to master the parts of speech because… KNOWING grammar helps our brains organize our language more efficiently. If we understand what makes sentences and paragraphs clearer and more interesting and precise, we will all be better writers and better communicators overall. Grammar Matters continued – why is it important that we know grammar and parts of speech? What do you remember about GRAMMAR? Parts of Speech The text to the right came from Brock Haussamen, professor of English at Raritan Valley Community College of New Jersey, quoted at http://grammar.about.com/od/gra mmarfaq/f/grammarvalue.htm Grammar is important because it is the language that makes it possible for us to talk about language. Grammar names the types of words and word groups that make up sentences not only in English but in any language. As human beings, we can put sentences together even as children--we can all do grammar. But to be able to talk about how sentences are built, about the types of words and word groups that make up sentences--that is knowing about grammar. And knowing about grammar offers a window into the human mind and into our amazingly complex mental capacity. People associate grammar with errors and correctness. But knowing about grammar also helps us understand what makes sentences and paragraphs clear and interesting and precise. Grammar can be part of literature discussions, when we and our students closely read the sentences in poetry and stories. And knowing about grammar means finding out that all languages and all dialects follow grammatical patterns. Parts of Speech Hint: Nine (9) Think… who… what… when… where… why… how Review parts of speech in small groups, each group coming up with all the parts of speech and examples of each. Then share them as a class on the board. A yellow car is parked outside the school next to the west curb. An alligator is an extremely dangerous animal, but a kitty is not. Would you like to eat hot cereal or cold cereal? Mrs. Hartwig said you could choose your partner. The basketball team has practice at 3:30 in the afternoon. Your car is sweet! Video games can be fun, but they can also rot your brain. I want to go on vacation to a beautiful tropical island. There are now over 50 windmills built in our area.
