Hebrew Grammar I
Section 5.1 - Introduction
Three types of definite nouns
• Those with definite article: %l,M,ñh;
• Proper Nouns: ~yIr:ñc.mi
• Nouns with possessive pronoun: ybia'
Important because later we’ll learn about how Hebrew words
can be linked together. When that happens, all nouns are
definite if last noun is definite. For example:
~yIr:ñc.mi %l,m,ñ = “The king of
Egypt”
For now, we’ll focus on nouns with the definite article.

tyrIB. Be-reet
tyrIB.h; Hab-Be-reet
You can also just ask the question:
Does a vowel precede it?
Article and Conjunction
Section 5.4 – Initial Gutturals
BBI
Hebrew Grammar I
Principles:
• Gutturals (and r) cannot be doubled
(i.e., they reject daghesh fortes)
When the daghesh forte is rejected,
the preceding vowel usually lengthens
•
Remember: Short vowels like to be in
closed syllables!
