The Universal One-Handed Videogame Controller Casey Judge, Dan Higgins, David Muchene, Michael Harradon University of Massachusetts Lowell Our Client Peter Age 17 Junior at Lowell Catholic High School Suffered a stroke at just ten days old Has cerebral palsy Lost total motor control over the left side of body Objectives • Design a videogame controller that can be used with all modern game systems. • Design it in such a way that Peter will be able to access all of the functions effectively with one hand. • Consider aesthetics to minimize muscle effort required to use said controller in order to prevent Repetitive Motion Disorders (RMDs). Preliminary Research One handed controllers do exist, but their aesthetics make them unusable on a regular basis. Not all aspects of a controller are used at all times in most games. A standard game controller has 8 buttons, a 4-direction pad and 2 analog “control sticks”, each with two axis’. Solution •Standard Joystick is used as a base and functions as primary analog axis. •The circuit for interface with the game console will be removed from a universal game controller. Mode switch •Buttons placed under inside of fingers (“shoulder”) and finger tips. •Analog stick placed on top of joystick, to be used by thumb •Mode switch allows either of the analog sticks to alternately function as the directional pad, depending on game being played. Electronics A circuit to convert the analog signal created by the sticks into 4 discrete state digital signals for the directional pad. A circuit to switch the signal routing between each of the analog sticks based on the mode switch. Budget Joy Stick controller Computer Store $20 Transistors, quad op-amp, other electronics TEAMS Academy $15 Buttons and switch Electronics Goldmine $15 Universal Controller Electronics Goldmine $30 Total $80 Thank You Ms. Haileselassie of UMASS Lowell Sponsors: Goodrich Corporation, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Systems Tyco Electronics 3M Touch Systems Medtronics Foundation Philips Medical Systems
