Muhammad • Prophet of Islam • Had a vision that the angel Gabriel came down and asked him to spread the word of god. • The religions based on his teachings is Islam. Islam or Muslim? • Islam = “submission to the will of Allah” • Muslim = “one who has submitted” • Other words to know: – Arabic = official language of Islam – Mosque = house of worship – Qur’an (Koran) = holy text – Mecca = Islam’s holiest city – Allah = God, in Arabic .آمل أن تكونوا قد ليوم عظيم Five Pillars of Islam • To be a Muslim, all believers have to carry out these five duties • 1. Faith – a Muslim testifies to the following: “There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah” 2. Prayer • Muslims pray five times a day facing Mecca 3. Alms • Muslims donate money to the poor through a special religious tax (2 ½%) 4. Fasting Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan 5. Pilgrimage • All Muslims who are physically and financially able perform the hajj, or pilgrimage to Mecca, at least once in lifetime Learned • Using the information you learned today from lecture and the video, fill in the “Learned” section. – You must have at least 4 facts from the video and 4 facts from your notes.
