ISLAM, JUDAISM, AND CHRISTIANITY They have many similarities: believe in one god (monotheism) possess holy books (Christians have the Bible, Jews have the Torah, and Muslims have the Qur’an. Difference: For Muslims, Qur’an has God’s final messages to humanity. ISLAM SYMBOL CHRISTIANITY SYMBOL JUDAISM SYMBOL DISPATCH (10/18/11): What are the 5 Pillars of the Islamic faith? (pg.93) FIVE PILLARS OF FAITH 1. Shahadah 2. Salat 3. Zakat 4. Siyam 5. Hajj SHAHADAH Shahadah is dedication to Islam. “There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.” SALAT Salat is the daily worship (prayer). Emphasizes religious discipline, spirituality, and closeness to Allah. Muslims pray five times a day. ZAKAT Zakat is almsgiving (giving to those in need). Muslims believe that wealth becomes pure by giving some of it away and that sharing wealth helps control greed. Muslims give 2.5% of all their income and possessions to the needy. SIYAM Siyam is fasting (going without food). Muslims fast for an entire month during Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. Fasting teaches Muslims self-control and makes them realize what it would be like to be poor and hungry. HAJJ The hajj is the pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca (Makkah). All adult Muslims are expected to make at least one trip to Mecca during their lifetime.
