The Gospel of Christ vs. The Pillars of Islam “Five Pillars” of Islam: • Confessing Faith (Kalima) • Prayer (Salat) • Almsgiving (Zakat) • Fasting (Ramadan) • Pilgrimage (Hajj) Confessing Faith in Allah Shahada(s) – The confessions made by Muslims affirming the oneness of Allah and the role of Muhammad as Allah’s messenger. “There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is the Prophet of Allah.” One must state this to become a Muslim, and this is repeated continually by Muslims. Confess Confessing Faith in Faith in Christ as the Allah Son of God “Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God” (1 John 4:15). ”...And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God” (Acts 8:37; cf. Matt. 10:32-33; 16:13-18). Christ is Deity “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1; cf. 1:14). ”And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory” (1 Timothy 3:16; cf. Isa. 9:6; Mic. 5:2; Matt. 1:23; John 20:28). God in Three Persons “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness...” (Gen. 1:26; cf. 3:22; Isa. 6:8; Matt. 3:16-17; 28:19; 1 Cor. 12:4-6; 2 Cor. 13:14; etc.). God the Father – John 3:16; Eph. 4:6 (God described as “Father” 250 times in NT) God the Son – John 3:16; 20:28; 1 Tim. 3:16 God the Holy Spirit – Acts 5:1ff; Gen. 1:2 The Quran’s Claims About Jesus Muslims say Jesus was not the Son of God. “The Jews say, "Ezra is the son of Allah"; and the Christians say, "The Messiah is the son of Allah." That is their statement from their mouths; they imitate the saying of those who disbelieved [before them]. May Allah destroy them; how are they deluded?” (Sura 9:30). The Quran’s Claims About Jesus Muslims say Jesus was not Deity. “They have certainly disbelieved who say that Allah is Christ, the son of Mary. Say, "Then who could prevent Allah at all if He had intended to destroy Christ, the son of Mary, or his mother or everyone on the earth?" And to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them. He creates what He wills, and Allah is over all things competent” (Sura 5:17). The Quran’s Claims About Jesus The Quran teaches that Jesus was not even crucified! “And [for] their saying, "Indeed, we have killed the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, the messenger of Allah." And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him...Rather, Allah raised him to Himself...” (Suras 4:157-158). According to the Quran, Christ did not shed His blood for the remission of our sins, yet His death on the cross, burial, and resurrection is the theme of the Bible and the very foundation of Christianity! (Gen. 3:15; Psa. 22; Isa. 53; Matt. 16:21; 26:28; Acts 2:22-36; 17:31; 20:28; 1 Cor. 15; Gal. 3:13; Eph. 1:7; Phil. 2:5-8; 1 Tim. 2:5-6; 1 Pet. 1:18-19; Heb. 9:13-18; Rev. 13:8, etc.) To take away the cross is to take away: • The death of Christ (Gen. to Rev.) • The saving blood (Gen. to Rev.) • The demonstration of God’s love (Jn. 3:16; 15:13; Rom. 5:8; 1 Jn. 4:9-10) • The resurrection of Christ (1 Cor. 15) • The Gospel (death, burial, resurrection) • Our hope of being raised • God’s Plan of Salvation (baptized into Christ’s death, burial, resurrection) • THE ENTIRE BIBLE! What does the Bible reveal about Mohammed? John would say Mohammed was not guided by the Holy Spirit: “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, [that] shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come” (John 16:13; cf. Jude 3). What does the Bible reveal about Mohammed? Zechariah would say Mohammed lied. “In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness. And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD of hosts, that I will cut off the names of the idols out of the land, and they shall no more be remembered: and also I will cause the prophets and the unclean spirit to pass out of the land. And it shall come to pass, [that] when any shall yet prophesy, then his father and his mother that begat him shall say unto him, Thou shalt not live; for thou speakest lies in the name of the LORD...” (Zechariah 13:1-3; 1 Cor. 13:8ff). What does the Bible reveal about Mohammed? Paul would call him “accursed.” “...But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, If any [man] preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed” (Galatians 1:8-9). Prayer to Allah The devout Muslim prays five times a day, facing Mecca. The word “Mosque” means “place of prostration”: the building in which Muslims worship, including the Minaret (tower from which Muslims are called to prayer by the Mu’azzin – prayer caller), the Mihrab (the niche that marks the direction of Mecca), and the Minbar (the platform/pulpit from which the Friday sermon is delivered). Prayer to Allah Pray to God the Father through His Son Prayer is a spiritual blessing only for those “in Christ” (Isa. 59:1-2; Eph. 1:3; 1 Pet. 3:12). “And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples. And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name...” (Luke 11:1-2; cf. John 16:23; Eph. 5:20; Phil. 4:6). Almsgiving “The alms originally were voluntary, but all Muslims are legally required to give one-fortieth of their income for the destitute. There are other rules and regulations for produce, cattle, etc. Freewill offerings also can be exercised.” –Handbook of Today’s Religions Give of our means; do Almsgiving good unto all men “Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him...” (1 Corinthians 16:2). “Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world” (James 1:27). “As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith” (Galatians 6:10). Fasting (Ramadan) Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, during which time Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset. Fasting (Ramadan) Fast privately, at own discretion “Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly” (Matthew 6:16-18; cf. 9:14-15; Acts 13:2; 14:23). “But in all [things] approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses, In stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labours, in watchings, in fastings...” (2 Corinthians 6:4-5). “In weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness” (2 Corinthians 11:27). “All of us, on occasion, should resolutely put out of our hearts every semblance of worldly desire, and fleshly appetite, and with prayer and fasting, draw very near to God and claim his support and guidance in life...In view of the fact that neither time nor manner of observance is given for fasting, we must conclude that these are matters to be determined in each instance, and by each person participating” –Guy N. Woods Pilgrimage (Hajj) Muslims must make a pilgrimage (Hajj) to Mecca at least once in his or her lifetime where various rituals and rites are performed in the month of Dhul-Hijah. The word Ka’bah means “cube” and refers to the central shrine in Mecca to which pilgrimages are made; Arabs believe it was built by Abraham and Ishmael. Pilgrimage (Hajj) Go into all the world; No place holier than another; Assemble with local saints “And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned” (Mark 16:15-16; cf. Matt. 28:18-20). “Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father” (John 4:19-21). “And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some [is]; but exhorting [one another]: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching” (Hebrews 10:24-25). Is there a “Sixth Pillar”? • Confessing Faith • Prayer • Almsgiving • Fasting • Pilgrimage • Jihad “There is a sixth religious duty associated with the five pillars. This is Jihad, the Holy War. This duty requires that when the situation warrants, men are required to go to war to spread Islam or defend it against infidels.” – Handbook of Today’s Religions Does the Quran teach its followers to kill those who are not Muslims, or has the Quran been misrepresented and unjustly criticized? The Quran says Allah told Mohammed to gather soldiers and fight against “those who disbelieve” “So fight, [O Muhammad], in the cause of Allah; you are not held responsible except for yourself. And encourage the believers [to join you] that perhaps Allah will restrain the [military] might of those who disbelieve. And Allah is greater in might and stronger in [exemplary] punishment” (Sura 4:84). The Quran commands fighting “Fighting has been enjoined upon you while it is hateful to you. But perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah Knows, while you know not” (Sura 2:216). “Fight against those who believe not in Allah, nor in the Last Day, nor forbid that which has been forbidden by Allah and His messenger and those who acknowledge not the religion of truth [Islam, JPH] among the people of Scripture [Jews and Christians, JPH], until they pay the Jizyah [tax, JPH] with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued” (Sura 9:29). “Slay the idolaters” “But when the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the idolaters wherever ye find them, and take them, and prepare them each ambush. But if they repent and establish worship and pay the poor due, then leave their way free” (Sura 9:5). 8:12 - Cut off their finger tips; stab them in their necks. Strike their necks and “slaughter” them “So when you meet those who disbelieve [in battle], strike [their] necks until, when you have inflicted slaughter upon them, then secure their bonds, and either [confer] favor afterwards or ransom [them] until the war lays down its burdens. That [is the command]. And if Allah had willed, He could have taken vengeance upon them [Himself], but [He ordered armed struggle] to test some of you by means of others...” (Sura 47:4). Fight until the only religion left is Islam “And fight them until there is no fitnah and [until] the religion, all of it, is for Allah. And if they cease – then indeed, Allah is Seeing of what they do” (Sura 8:39). Fight, and you will go to Paradise “So let those fight in the cause of Allah who sell the life of this world for the Hereafter. And he who fights in the cause of Allah and is killed or achieves victory – We will bestow upon him a great reward” (Sura 47:4; cf. 48:16-17). Martyrdom = a trip to Paradise “...And those who are killed in the cause of Allah – never will He waste their deeds. He will guide them and amend their condition. And admit them to Paradise, which He has made known to them” (47:4-6). The Quran and punishment of enemies “The punishment of those who wage war against God and his Apostle, and strive with might and main for mischief through the land is: execution, or crucifixion, or cutting off of hands and feet from opposite sides, or exile from the land” (5:36). “The term "jihad,” often translated “holy war,” literally means “struggle.” When studied chronologically, the Qur'an concept of war appears to evolve: A. Stage one: No retaliation (in Mecca) B. Stage two: Defensive fighting permitted (first instruction in Medina) C. Stage three: Defensive fighting commanded (revised instruction in Medina) D. Stage four: Offensive war commanded to kill pagans and humble Christians and Jews (after conquering Mecca)” -- Mark Copeland; cf. Richard P. Bailey, Jihad: The Teaching of Islam From Its Primary Sources – The Qur'an and Hadith “The main tenets of Islam can be very appealing...A call to believe in one God...a call to repentance and submission to the will of God; a call to holy living, involving diligent prayer, fasting, charity, and pilgrimage. Yet the early history of Islam and recent events have many people wondering...Is Islam a religion of peace? Does Islam allow people to live together in harmony regardless of race, class or beliefs? Most Muslims say they are for living together in peace and harmony—especially those living in countries where Muslims are in the minority; yet one might ask, "Is this because of Islam, or in spite of Islam? Would there be calls for peace and tolerance if Muslims were the majority?” -- Mark Copeland Kill your enemies (Jihad) Love your enemies; Do good to them “Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you” (Matthew 5:43-44). “Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but [rather] give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance [is] mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good” (Romans 12:17-21). “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places...Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace” (Ephesians 6:12, 14-15; cf. Rom. 10:15). Various Differences in Doctrine Islam on Sin “Surely good deeds take away evil deeds” (11:114). Kabira (“big sins”)—murder, adultery, drunkenness, disobeying parents, neglecting Ramadan or Friday prayers, gambling, dancing, shaving the beard, forgetting the Koran after reading it, usury… Forgiveness with repentance. Saghira (“little sins”)—deceit, anger, lust. Forgiveness if greater sins are avoided and good deeds are performed. Shirk—association (of other gods with Allah). No forgiveness. Salvation by own effort (40:9, 39:61, 7:43) Charity atones for sins (2:271,277) • Earn the favor of Allah. • Earn salvation. • Earn paradise. Predestination In Islam, Allah determines everything, even who will choose to follow him. 2:142; 6:39; 6:125 Islam: Salvation is earned through the efforts of those who were pre-selected by Allah to inhabit a very sensual paradise. Christianity: Salvation is granted by the grace of a loving God to those who, through faith, repentance, and obedience accept that loving gift. Marriage, Divorce & Remarriage. “So if a husband divorces his wife (irrevocably), he cannot after that, remarry her until after she has married another husband and he has divorced her...” (Sura 2.230). The Quran and Wives “...marry those that please you of [other] women, two or three or four...” (Sura 4:3). Sexual relations with captive female slaves is acceptable. Sura 23:5-6; 70:30 The Quran and Paradise “The true servants of Allah will be well provided for, feasting on fruit and honored in gardens of delight. Reclining face to face upon soft couches, they shall be served with a goblet filled at a gushing fountain… delicious to those who drink it. They shall sit with bashful, dark-eyed virgins, chaste as the sheltered eggs of ostriches.” -- 37:40-49. See also 78:32ff. “Muslims believe that Jesus is one of the greatest prophets who came to the Israelites. Is it not odd that Muslims make such a statement when major differences exist between the doctrine of Christ and the doctrine of Muhammad? The teachings of Muhammad go against the words of Christ. No support for Islamic doctrines is forthcoming from the Bible. These different messages show that no agreement exists between Christ and Muhammad. There is no way that Muhammad can be a prophet of God” –Richard Massey • Mohammed never claimed to be Deity, but Christ did. • Mohammed never claimed to die for our sins. • Mohammed never did a miracle, but he said Christ did! • Mohammed said that he and all prophets had sinned (with the exception of Jesus!) • Mohammed admitted that Christ’s body is not on earth (but Mohammed’s body is). • Mohammed did not die for us; Christ did! • Mohammed did not rise from the grave, but Christdid! • Mohammed is not on the right hand of the Father, but Christ is! • Mohammed said Jesus was the virgin-born Messiah, and he spoke favorably of the Injil (Gospel) of Christ, saying it was from God (Sura 3:3; 9:31; 19:20). • Will you believe the Gospel of Christ and obey it?
