The Theory of Plate
Tectonics
Plate Tectonics Power Point
Unit B: The Dynamic Earth
 Learning Target:
4b) Compare and contrast (movement,
location, landforms, specific examples)
the three major types of plate
boundaries. (DOK2)
Essential Question
What are the different types of plate
boundaries and how do they impact us and
the Earth?
Vocabulary
 Plate:
 A section of the lithosphere that slowly
moves over the asthenosphere, carrying
pieces of continental and oceanic crust.
 Plate Tectonics:
 The theory that pieces of Earth’s lithosphere
are in constant motion, driven by convection
currents in the mantle.
Vocabulary
 Plate Boundary
 Where two plates meet
 Fault:
 A break in Earth’s crust where slabs of rock
slip past each other.
 Rift Valley:
 A deep valley that forms where two plates
move apart.

EXAMPLES
Plate Boundaries
 The lithosphere is broken into separate
plates
sections called __________.
 True or False: Plates can carry
continents or parts of the ocean floor but
not both.
 False
Divergent Boundaries

Ocean-Continent Convergence
Continent-Continent Convergence
Transform Boundary
A Theory of Plate Motion
 Pieces of Earth’s lithosphere are in
constant, slow motion, driven by
convection currents in the mantle.
 True or False: The theory of plate tectonics
explains the formation, movement, and
subduction of Earth’s plates.
 True
Plate Boundaries
 True or False: Crust is both created and
destroyed along a transform boundary.
 False
 Most divergent boundaries occur at the
mid-ocean ridge
________________.
 The density of the plate determines
which plate comes out on top.
The Continent’s Slow
Dance
 Plates move from about one to ten
centimeters per year.
 True or False: The pieces of the super
continent Pangaea began to drift apart
about 225 million years ago.
 True
