6 Kingdoms Only two ? -for hundreds of years there were only 2 kingdoms: Plantae (plants) and Animalia (animals) -eventually new species were discovered that didn't quite fit either one -new kingdoms had to be developed -there are currently 6 kingdoms into which we classify every known species Archaebacteria -have been on earth at least 3 billion years -name means "ancient bacteria" -able to survive in extremely harsh environments Ex: hot springs in Yellowstone Park or volcanic vents in the ocean floor Areopyrum lives in volcanic vents. Eubacteria -all other types of bacteria -live in soil, water, inside the human body -Escherichia coli (E. coli ) can be found in human intestines E. coli produces vitamin K. Causes "food poisoning". Can be easily altered through genetic engineering. Protista (protists) -single-celled or simple multicellular organisms -eukaryotic, having evolved from bacteria about 2 billion years ago -includes all eukaryotes that are not plants, animals, or fungi -3 types: Protazoa (animal-like), Algae (plant-like), Slime & Water Molds (fungi-like) Giant Kelp Paramecium Euglena Plantae (plants) -complex -multicellular -usually green -use photosynthesis to make glucose Ex: Trees, shrubs, flowering plants Fungi -complex -multicellular -use digestive juices to breakdown materials and absorb their nutrients Ex: molds & mushrooms Animalia (animals) -complex & multicellular -can move -have a nervous system -cells lack a cell wall Ex: birds, fish, reptiles, insects, mammals
