Sexually Transmitted Diseases What is a STD? An STD is a disease spread from person to person through sexual contact. STD’s used to be call venereal diseases (VD) Many people have an “it can’t happen to me” attitude about STD’s 2 Who can get an STD? STD’s can happen to anyone who doesn’t practice abstinence Abstinence- refusing to participate in unsafe behaviors or activities 3 The facts about STD’s They can have serious health consequences, including sterility/infertility and even death Some STD’s are curable while others are not The only sure protection against STD’s is abstinence (avoiding sexual contact) 4 The facts about STD’s continued… Someone who has an STD may not visible symptoms, or may have symptoms that come and go Having an STD once does not make you immune to the disease in the future. 5 Can I get a vaccine for STD’s? There are currently no vaccines available against STD’s. There is 1 vaccine for WOMEN that protects against the HPV virus. HPV is the virus that leads to cervical cancer. 6 Chlamydia Caused by a bacteria that affects the reproductive organs A majority of people who have Chlamydia are females Half of the people who have it, don’t know that they have it 7 Chlamydia continued…. It is the most common STD. Symptoms may include a genital discharge and burning during urination. May be passed from the infected mother to the unborn child (before or during birth) Antibiotics can be taken to cure Chlamydia 8 Gonorrhea Caused by a bacteria that affects the genital mucous membrane and sometimes other body parts, such as the heart and joints A common STD like Chlamydia 9 Gonorrhea Symptoms include a thick, yellow genital discharge and burning during urination Doctors can treat gonorrhea with antibiotics 10 Genital Herpes Caused by a virus that produces painful blisters in the genital area. Many people who have this don’t realize it Symptoms may go away and then come back 11 Genital Herpes Continued… The disease has no cure There is medication to help relive the symptoms Once you have genitals herpes you have it for the REST of your life! 12 Syphilis Caused by a virus that affects may parts of the body Symptoms may include a painless sore at the site where the disease entered the body If syphilis is left untreated, it may spread to the central nervous system and heart causing heart disease and eventually death 13 Syphilis Continued….. May also lead to blindness and insanity if untreated Syphilis can be cured by taking antibiotics 14 Is Abstinence the only sure way to protect yourself from STD’s Although the pressure to engage in sexual activity can be strong, abstinence is the only healthy decision. Everyday you are exposed to messages in the media that give the impression that everyone is having sex 15 Sex is a wrong choice for teens because: It can head to unintended pregnancy It can lead to STD’s It can cause you to lose focus on your long-term goals (education, job, etc.) 16 Physical attraction to another person is a normal part of life It is important not to let these feelings control your decisions You can express affection for another person in ways that don’t risk your health or values 17 By practicing abstinence, you can be sure that your relationships with others are built on shared interests and mutual trust, rather than on sex. 18 Abstinence is the only pregnancy and STD/HIV/AIDS prevention method that is 100% effect, 100% safe, and 100% free of side effects 19
