What are Animal-like protists? Animal-Like Protists • Called Protozoas • Single-celled • Some parasites • 4 Groups: amoebalike protists, flagellates, cilliates, & spore-forming protists Ameobalike Protists • Soft, jelly-like • Found in fresh/salt water, soil, animals as parasites. • contractile vacuoles • Pseudopodia: false feet Feeding Amoebas Engulf food 1. 2. Senses food. Surrounds bacteria or smaller protists with pseudopodia making a food vacuole. • Some parasitic amoebas live in human intestines and cause amebic dysentery (painful bleeding ulcers). Protozoa with Shells Radiolarians • Have an outer shell made of silica Foraminiferans • Have snail-like shells made of calcium carbonate Flagellates • Have flagellums to move. • Live in water. • Some are parasites that cause dieases. Ex. Giardia Lamblia (diarrhea) •Some have symbiotic relationships. Ex. Live in guts of termites to digest wood. Ciliates • Have 100’s of hair-like structures called cilia. • Cilia: move, help it get food, beat up to 60 x’s a second. Ex: Paramecium Paramecium Have 2 Nucleus Macronucleus • Large nucleus •Controls the functions of the cell. Micronucleus • Smaller nucleus •Passes genetic material during reproduction Protist Reproduction Asexually • Offspring come from just 1 parent using fission Sexually • Offspring come from 2 parents. Ex. Paramecium use Ex. Euglena and amoebas conjugation to make 4 total organisms! Spore-Forming Protists • Parasites • Have 2 hosts. Ex. Plasmodium Vivax (Malaria) Malaria has 2 hosts! The mosquito and you!
