In order to act intelligently, a computer must have knowledge about the domain of interest. The process of
collecting, representing, and organizing the knowledge is called knowledge engineering (KE). KE deals
with the development of intelligent information systems in which knowledge and reasoning play pivotal
role. KE is a subfield of artificial intelligence and includes: knowledge acquisition, knowledge-based
systems, knowledge compilation, shells and tools, methodologies, modeling, knowledge management,
knowledge discovery, and knowledge representation. Knowledge engineering have become an efficient
approach for developing knowledge-based systems in medical sciences ,health care and many other
domains (e.g. e-Government, e-Learning, e-Business , ect..).
The aim of this tutorial is to present topics from the areas of knowledge engineering in the ligh of
medical informatics and health care. The goal is to make an overview of some Knowledge engineering
approaches and their applications in medicine.
The tutorial will includes the following examples:
1- Expert systems for Cancer and Heart Diagnosis.
2- Case-Based Reasoning for Cancer and Heart Diagnosis
3- Ontological Engineering Approach for Breast Cancer Knowledge Management,
4- Mining Patient Data Based on Rough Set Theory To Determine Thrombosis Disease
