Web Pages
• A Web page is a document that can contain text,
graphics, videos, sound clips and links to other
pages.
• Links between pages are called hypertext links
and allow you to follow an information thread.
• A computer linked to the Internet that holds a Web
page is called a Web server.

• A group of related Web pages that contain
information about a specific topic (such as a
company, person, event, etc.) is called a Web site.
• Each Web site is created and maintained by one or
more people called Webmasters.
• The main page on a Web site is called a home
page.

Web Pages
• A Web page often contains many links to other
pages.
• These links may be from a particular string of
words (called a text link) or from a picture
(graphics link).
• When you move your cursor over one of these
links, it turns into a hand-shaped link pointer.
• Clicking a link sends a copy of the new page to
your PC for you to view.

What’s a URL?
XP
• Each Web server is located by a specific address
called a URL (uniform resource locator).
• URLs are constructed of several pieces:
– Most begin with http:// (Hypertext Transfer Protocol),
https:// for secure sights.
– Web server’s name – i.e. www.amazon
– The top-level domain – i.e. .com, .org, or .edu
– Using these three pieces connects you to the Web site’s
home page – http://www.amazon.com

What’s a URL?

• URLs are constructed of several pieces (cont):
– You can also connect directly to a specific page on the
Web site using the folder and file name
– Web pages are normally stored in HTML (Hypertext
Markup Language) format
– Path names follow the server name and are separated
from it by slashes.
– The world news site on CNN is:
http://www.CNN.com/world/

Using a Web Browser
• A Browser is software that reads Web pages and
interprets the HTML tags embedded in each page
so that it can be displayed on your screen.
• Two popular browsers are Microsoft Internet
Explorer and Netscape Navigator.
• Some times in order to display special files or
media, you might need to install a special plug-in.
• Browsers often store information about you and
your preferences in cookies on your PC.

Using a Search Engine
• A search engine is a giant catalog similar to the
one at your library that allows you to locate
information on Web pages.
• Search engines work with key words or phrases
• Most can handle both simple and combination
searches.
• Google and Yahoo are two common search
engines.

Saving Text and Graphics
from the Web
XP
• You can print a Web page by using your browser’s
print button.
• You can copy text from Web pages by highlighting
it and using the copy option on the browser. You
can then paste it into any program.
• You can copy graphics from the Web by rightclicking them and using the Save Picture as
option.
• Be aware that most information is copyrighted!

• There are other higher speed and wireless
alternatives to modems:
– ISDN – medium speed service using 2 telephone lines
and a modem can deliver up to 128 Kbps.
– DSL (Digital Subscriber Line Service) – special
telephone line delivers 1 to 4 Mbps.
– T-1 service – dedicated high speed line for commercial
use, but too expensive for home use.

• There are other higher speed and wireless

– Direct satellite service – uses satellite disk to receive
transmissions. Receives data only, telephone line used
to send data.
– Cable modem – cabled back to cable TV company.
Currently fastest Internet option for individual PCs.
