TECHNOLOGY :The new
frontier in English education.
Two students discussing past and present
technology vocabulary
An application was for employment . A program was a
TV show. A cursor used profanity. A keyboard was a
piano! Memory was something that you lost with age. A
CD was a bank account . Compress was something you
did to garbage Not something you did to a file. Log on
was adding wood to a fire. Hard drive was a long trip
on the road. A mouse pad was where a mouse lived.
And a backup happened to your commode! Cut - you
did with a pocket knife. Paste you did with glue. A web
was a spider's home. And a virus was the flu! I guess
I'll stick to my pad and paper and the memory in my
head. I hear nobody's been killed in a computer crash
But when it happens they wish they were dead!

2005, p.8)

 The combination of sound, pictures and
videos; renders learning fascinating
 Learning tools, such as Web quests,
enable proficiency in following directions
and conducting research
 The interactive website, is a major
learning tool.
 It has a gripping effect on the student and
imparts
an
knowledge
extraordinary
amount
of
• The tedium associated with classroom learning is
dispelled by these mechanisms
•
Tools, like virtual museums allow the student to
explore any topic at depth, and from perspectives that
are difficult to envisage in the traditional classroom
• Information relating to mathematical concepts,
phonetics, physical sciences, biological sciences,
commerce, to name a few areas; can be imparted in
the manner of a computer game. The engrossing
nature of these games, promotes academic excellence

Computer Assisted
Programs
• Internet based student
assessment systems are superior
to convention systems
• These systems employ web tools
that ensure an optimal
assessment model
• A good assessment strategy
utilizes different evaluation
strategies
• The ICT literacy test evaluates proficiency in
IT skills, but also the competence to apply
these skills in the real world
• Such strategies are equitable, rational and
well defined
• The learning experience is simplified to an appropriate use of technology, and
there was shift in focus from teacher centered to student centered
• Natural affinity towards computer based learning
• Familiarity with computers develops confidence in the students, who feel
competent to successfully undertake even difficult assignments
• The use of technology, permits students
to obtain information about any topic,
regardless of its abstruseness
• Active involvement with content provides
optimal learning
• Such involvement bestows long lasting
skills that result in significantly improved
academic achievement
Technology and Pedagogy
• Use of Technology should
be in tune with specific
pedagogical practices
that are oriented towards
specific learning goals
• “with reference to the use
of the Internet, rather
than allowing technology
to drive classroom
instruction, teachers must
clearly identify specific
objectives, procedures,
and assessment
techniques for using
online resources” (Randall
Davis 2006)
Why ICT Matters?
• Including ICT in the language curriculum, incorporating
computer activities with texts and pictures in a
productive way, using authentic websites to design class
room activities, enabling task based learning and
cooperative language learning, developing cross cultural
communication and intercultural competence through
emails and chats, incorporating audio-visual aids to
promote pronunciation and accent, and using computer
assisted language testing software, online training and
tutorials and online resources develop the language skills
of the second language learners (Laborda & Royo 2007)
Computer Assisted Learning: The
Key to Language Mastery
• Computer Assisted Learning ‘promotes
collaboration among learners’, ‘encourages
peer review’, ‘enhances oral skills’,
decreases teacher domination of
discussions’, and ‘provides more
opportunities for student expression that
lead to more language production’
(Sotillo).

Classroom Interaction and

Use Word Processors To
Create Documents.
Use word processors, like Microsoft Word,
Openoffice Writer, of Google Docs .
Do not use simple text editors, such as
Notepad or WordPad.
Use Your Computers To Daily
Review the Scholastic Activities
Done In Class.
