But, like image files, you must make sure that you use the multimedia files ethically by following all of the rules set by the site you are visiting. pp. 9.1 244-248 Multimedia and Web Design Tools for Creating Multimedia Web Sites Designers who create multimedia Web sites use a variety of multimedia authoring tools. These tools can allow you to edit audio and/or video files, as well as create animations. multimedia authoring tools Special software applications used by Web site designers and developers to create multimedia Web sites. (p. 247) pp. 9.1 244-248 Multimedia and Web Design Evaluating Multimedia Web Sites When you plan a multimedia Web site, ask yourself the following questions: • Do the multimedia files support each page’s goals? • Are the pages cluttered? • Do any media components distract visitors? • Does the site give you the option to skip clips? • Do components such as sound and video work correctly? • Do the media components add to the enjoyment of the site? pp. 9.2 250-256 Adding Audio and Video to a Site Guide to Reading Main Ideas Key Terms You can insert both audio and video into your Web pages. Audio and video files come in a variety of formats. plug-in digital video recorder analog video recorder video capture card pp. 9.2 250-256 Adding Audio and Video to a Site Audio and Video Files Audio and video files come in a variety of formats, including: Audio Wave (.wav) Midi (.midi) RealAudio (.ram, .rm) AIFF (.aif, .aifc, .aiff) AU, SAND (.au, .sand) MPEG (.mp3) Video AVI (.avi) MPEG (.mpg) QuickTime (.mov, .qt) RAM RealVideo (.ram) Windows Media Video (.wmv, .asf) pp. 9.2 250-256 Adding Audio and Video to a Site Audio and Video Files Many audio and video files require a plug-in to play. You can download most plug-ins for free from the company’s Web site. plug-in An application that works with a Web browser to play a particular file format, such as an audio or video file. (p. 251) pp. 9.2 250-256 Adding Audio and Video to a Site Creating and Adding Audio Files to a Site To create sound files, you will need a microphone and an audio application to record audio and save it in a file. You can incorporate sound into your Web pages in two basic ways: 1. You can create a button and link a sound file to the button. 2. You can set the sound file to play automatically when the page loads. pp. 9.2 250-256 Adding Audio and Video to a Site Creating Video Files To create your own video you need either a digital or analog video recorder. If you use an analog video recorder, you must translate the video into a digital format using a video capture card. digital video recorder A device that creates digital video that a computer can use directly. (p. 253) analog video recorder A device that creates analog video. This video must be translated into a digital format before a computer can use it. (p. 253) video capture card A circuit board that can convert analog video to digital video. (p. 253) pp. 9.2 250-256 Adding Audio and Video to a Site Adding Video Files to a Site It can be challenging to include video clips on a Web site. Many designers provide a link to the video clip to make them easier for the user to access, rather than starting when the page opens. pp. 9.2 Adding Audio and Video to a Site • Activity 9A – Inserting Background Sounds (p. 252) • Activity 9B – Inserting a Video Clip (p. 254) 250-256 pp. 9.3 258-260 Adding Animation to a Site Guide to Reading Main Ideas Key Terms Animation provides the appearance of motion. One way of creating animations is to use a series of GIF images, which you can incorporate into a Web page in the same way as a graphic.
