Tawheed:
One God
{
Belief in one God, Allah in Arabic, constitutes the very
foundation of Islam. There is no deity except Allah. He is
indivisible and absolutely transcendent. God is the Almighty, the
Creator and the Sustainer of the universe, Who is similar to
nothing and nothing is comparable to Him.

The basic message of Islam is that God (Allah in Arabic)
and His creation are distinctly different entities. Neither is
Allah His creation or a part of it, nor is His creation Him or
a part of Him. This might seem obvious, but, man's worship
of creation instead of the Creator is to a large degree based
on ignorance of this concept. It is the belief that the essence
of Allah is everywhere in His creation…
Tawheed is the essence of Islam

However, the message of Islam as brought by
the prophets of Allah is to worship only Allah
and to avoid the worship of his creation either
directly or indirectly.

God is He, than Whom there is no other god;Who knows (all things) both secret and open;
He, Most Gracious, Most Merciful. God is He,
than Whom there is no other god;- the
Sovereign, the Holy One, the Source of Peace
(and Perfection), the Guardian of Faith, the
Preserver of Safety, the Exalted in Might, the
Irresistible, the Supreme: Glory to God! (High
is He) above the partners they attribute to Him.
Tawheed is the essence of Islam

He is God, the Creator, the Evolver, the
Bestower of Forms (or Colors). To Him belong
the Most Beautiful Names: whatever is in the
heavens and on earth, doth declare His Praises
and Glory: and He is the Exalted in Might, the
Wise. (59:22-24)

Prophet Abraham built the Kaaba for people to worship
God. While pagan Arabs admitted this fact and even kept
the stone where he used to stand to build the Kaaba
(Abraham's station), they brought idols to the Kaaba and
worshiped them to get closer to Abraham's Lord, Allah,
God of gods. Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H.) came with
the monotheistic message of Islam. Arabs defended these
idols and refused to give up the religion of their fathers
and grandfathers. They offered to Muhammad a deal,
that is to worship their gods for one year, and they
worship Allah alone for one year.


[Say : O ye that reject Faith! I worship not that which ye
worship, Nor will ye worship that which I worship. And
I will not worship that which ye have been wont to
worship, Nor will ye worship that which I worship. To
you be your Way, and to me mine. ]109:1-6

Later on, the Quran started calling Allah by
other names. One of those holy names was AlRahman (the Gracious). Arabs wondered:"is
this a new God?" The Quran responded again:
[Say: "Call upon Allah, or call upon Rahman:
by whatever name ye call upon Him, (it is
well): for to Him belong the Most Beautiful
Names. ]17:110

It is not a new god; it is a new name for the
same God. Allah has ninety nine names in
Islam; all of them are holy and speak about
different attributes of the same creator,
almighty Allah. As an example, read these
verses of the Quran:
[Allah is He, than Whom there is no other god;
Who knows (all things) both secret and open;
He, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Islam believes in ‘Tawheed’ which is not merely monotheism i.e.
belief in one God, but much more. Tawheed literally means
‘unification’ i.e. ‘asserting oneness’ and is derived from the
Arabic verb ‘Wahhada’ which means to unite, unify or
consolidate.
Tawheed can be divided into three categories.
1. Tawheed ar-Ruboobeeyah
2. Tawheed al-Asmaa-was-Sifaat
3. Tawheed al-Ibaadah.
Tawheed is the essence of Islam

‘Tawheed-ar-Ruboobeeyah’ means maintaining
the unity of Lordship. This category is based on
the fundamental concept that Allah (swt) alone
caused all things to exist when there was
nothing.
Tawheed is the essence of Islam

The second category is ‘Tawheed al Asmaa was Sifaat’
which means maintaining the unity of Allah’s name and
attributes.

Tawheed al-Ibaadah’ means maintaining the unity of
worship or ‘Ibaadah’. Ibaadah is derived from Arabic
word ‘Abd’ meaning slave or servant. Thus Ibaadah means
servitude and worship.
Tawheed is the essence of Islam

Shirk is the greatest sin that Allah will never
forgive

‘Shirk’ literally means sharing or associating
partners. In Islamic terms it means associating
partners with Allah and is equivalent to
idolatry.
Shirk is the biggest sin

The Qur’an describes the greatest sin in Surah AlNisa’:
"Allah forgives not
That partners should be set up
With Him; but He forgives
Anything else, to whom
He pleases; to set up
Partners with Allah
Is to devise a sin
Most heinous indeed."
[Al-Qur’an 4:48]
