Narrated by Ibn 'Umar: Allah's Apostle said: Islam is based on (the following) five (principles): 1. To testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and Muhammad is Allah's Apostle. 2. To offer the (compulsory congregational) prayers dutifully and perfectly. 3. To pay Zakat. (i.e. obligatory charity) 4. To perform Hajj. (i.e. Pilgrimage to Mecca) 5. To observe fast during the month of Ramadan. Sahih Bukhari, Book of Belief, Hadith 7 What is Tawheed? Muslims and even most kuffar believe in God (Allah). But the Muslim’s belief in Allah is the belief in Tawheed What is Tawheed? Tawheed basically means the Oneness of Allah. There is only 1 true God, and that is Allah. Tawheed is made up of three parts: Tawheed Ar-Ruboobiyah Allah is the Creator of everything Tawheed Asmaa wa Sifaat Allah has the best names and qualities. No one else has these qualities. Examples: Allah is: and controls and rules over everything Al Baseer (All Seeing) Al Sami’ (All Hearing) Tawheed Al-Ibaadah Allah is the only One who has the right to be worshipped. “All acts of worship are to Allah” 2006 Talibiddeen Jr. What is Worship? We all know that we must worship Allah and Him only, but: What is Worship? Worship is: To obey Allah completely, Doing what He loves And staying away from what He hates Examples of Worship: Praying Fasting Giving Zakah Seeking Knowledge Fighting enemies of Islam Saying good words The word for worship in Arabic is Making Hajj Visiting the Sick (‘Ibadah) Can you think of other examples of worship? (Remember: worship also means staying away from things that Allah has forbidden) 2006 Talibiddeen Jr. What is Shirk? Muslims must be careful to stay away from shirk. It is the one thing that Allah will not forgive us for. What is Shirk? In a dictionary, “Shirk” means to give partners to something. In Islam, it can mean to: • • • Worship others along with Allah, To give created beings and things Allah’s names and attributes, To believe that others share Allah’s control and rule over the creation “Surely Allah will not forgive the association of partners (shirk) with Him, but He forgives (sins) less than that of whomever He wishes.
