The Minor in Anthropology
What is Anthropology?
Anthropology literally means the study of humans, and it involves both sociocultural and biological aspects of
humankind. Anthropologists examine human cultural/biological variation and complexity through a
combination of the scientific and humanistic methods. The discipline is holistic, historical, and interpretive,
highlighting both conceptual understanding and hands-on fieldwork experience. Anthropology is intrinsically
global in scope emphasizing the examination of the similarities and differences between human groups,
cultures, and societies.
The Minor
The department offers a minor degree in anthropology, consisting of a minimum of 21 credit hours. The
following subfields of anthropology are included: cultural anthropology, the study of human cultures in the
present or recent past, biological anthropology, the study of humans from a biological and evolutionary
perspective, and archaeology, the study of human cultures through examining the material record.
Unique Features of the Minor
The minor in anthropology at SLU offers students the opportunity to explore exciting courses such as race
and ethnicity, environmental anthropology, archaeology, primate social behavior, and forensic anthropology
as well as providing a background in basic anthropological theory and social science methodology.
Possibilities are available for field courses in archaeology and primate behavior, as well as assisting faculty
with ongoing research projects. By participating in the minor, students will be further prepared to successfully
function in an interconnected world. The minor in anthropology complements a variety of other majors at
SLU.

NOTE: Students wishing to declare a minor must officially do so through either the Office of
Academic Advising, Academic Services Center, or at the College of Arts & Sciences Office, 2nd
Floor DuBourg Hall, 977-2708. Once you declare a minor and have been accepted into the
department, you will be assigned a departmental academic advisor.

We strongly recommended that students plan their coursework sequentially. SOC 1200 is a prerequisite for
SOC 2200 and SOC 2210, and should be taken before any other courses in the Anthropology minor.
Grade Requirements: Students must receive a C- or better in all required courses for any major, minor, or
certificate in this department. Students must maintain an overall GPA at or above 2.0 at SLU to participate
in the department’s programs.
Minor advisors and the Department Chair reserve the right to alter any of the above in consultation with
each other for the benefit of the Anthropology minor or particular needs of the minor candidates. Please be
advised that no more than ONE elective may double-count for another, separate major or minor within
the department.
