Lesson Plan (Science) TOPIC: Human Organ Systems – Grade 5 Length 100mins (over two lessons with additional time for research and computer use) CURRICULUM EXPECTATIONS: Big Ideas: Organ systems are components of a larger system (the body) and, as such, work together and affect one another (Overall expectations 2 and 3); Organ structures are linked to their functions (Overall expectations 2 and 3); Systems in the human body work together to meet our basic needs (Overall expectations 2 and 3); Choices we make affect our organ systems and, in turn, our overall health (Overall expectations 1 and 3). Relating Science and Technology to Society and the Environment: 1.1 Assess the effects of social and environmental factors on human health, and propose ways in which individuals can reduce the harmful effects of these factors and take advantage of those that are beneficial; 1.2 Evaluate the effects, both beneficial and harmful, of various technologies on human body systems, taking different perspectives into account. Developing Investigation and Communication Skills: 2.4 Use appropriate science and technology vocabulary, including circulation, respiration, digestion, organs, and nutrients, in oral and written communication; 2.5 Use a variety of forms to communicate with different audiences and for a variety of purposes. Understanding Basic Concepts: 3.1 Identify major systems in the human body and describe their roles and interrelationships; Emerson Jones 3.2 Describe the basic structure and function of major organs in the respiratory, circulatory, and digestive systems; 3.3 Identify interrelationships between body systems; Identify common diseases and the organs and/or body systems that they affect. Success Criteria: Provide a profile picture, name, and relevant Twitter handle for their respective organ system; Choose six organs (Twitter Followers) and describe their relationship to the assigned organ system by way of response to class and teacher prompted questioning; (3.1, 3.2, 3.3) Create a large scale Twitter display on Chart paper for the class presentation, and a standard sized version for submission to teacher; (2.4, 2.5) Write a detailed description of the systems’ functions and parts, which is to be included in submitted work; (2.4, 2.5, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3) Provide four “Worldwide trends” that relate to the organ system, i.e., medical advancements, environmental effects, incidents of disease, positive and negative effects of technology on organ system, etc.:(1.1, 1.2) Demonstrate an understanding of the interrelationship between systems through the response to questions from the class and teacher; (3.1, 3.2, 3.3) Create a quiz for the class on their assigned organ system, while providing answers to the created questions throughout the course of their presentations. (all) Materials: Twitter Template Handout Twitter Assessment Rubric Organ System Quiz (different for each pair) Computers Chart Paper Text Book Scissors Minds On: The Twitter activity is a summative assessment that will be completed over two lessons. The assignment is designed to be administered like a Jigsaw learning strategy, with each pair being responsible for a designated organ system, while collectively covering all of the systems as a class. To get the students interested in the activity, ask the class who is familiar with Twitter, or who is possibly using it (likely a surprising amount). Pulling up a science related Twitter account, for example: @neiltyson, or @TheScienceGuy will 1 Emerson Jones engage the students further. Inform the students of the Learning Goals and Success Criteria via a Rubric. Action: The activity will be done in pre-determined groups (pairs), based on learning styles and strengths, ensuring each group has a compatible mix of traits. If students prefer to work independently, it can be an option made available to them, though consideration for the time needed for each presentation needs to be taken into account. The students will be assigned an organ system that they are responsible for researching. They then must demonstrate an understanding of the Big Ideas discussed above. A template will be provided which the students can use as a format exemplar. The students will be responsible for researching, creating, and presenting their Twitter product, an accompanying detailed written description of the system, and a one-page quiz for the students in the class to complete (8 questions). Consolidation: The student groups will then present their organ system and share the information required on the rubric to the class via a chart-paper sized Twitter page. The teacher will ask students questions in order to facilitate self-reflection and metacognitive learning. For students who have a fear of public speaking, a video presenting the information can also be played to the class as an alternative via Apple TV technology. Confirmation that students have learned all of the systems, not just the one they were responsible for presenting on, will be ascertained by the student-developed quizzes and the breadth of their questions for the presenting groups. The quizzes should be turned in prior to presenting. Presentations also serve as excellent tools for deriving anecdotal notes on student performance as it provides an opportunity to reflect on their communication skills, group work, class participation, and attentiveness. Differentiated Considerations: All of the projects are required to have a Twitter theme; however, students are provided the option to work alone or in pairs, and to present their findings in front of the class or in the form of a video presentation (I-pads will be provided). In addition, the assignment was designed to include visual, oral, written, and research elements, greatly increasing the chance that the students will be able to find a part they engage with and feel comfortable doing. The pairs should be selected with this in mind. 2 Emerson Jones Organ Systems Twitter Page Rubric Teacher Name: Mr. Jones Student Name: CATEGORY Relevancy of Information Research Mechanics Communication Attractiveness and Organization ________________________________________ 4 Information accurately relates to the featured system.
