Affiliate Composer position
APPLICATION INFORMATION:
The Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) is inviting applications for the position of Affiliate
Composer, to begin during the 2015-16 season. The Affiliate Composer will work closely
with Music Director Peter Oundjian, TSO Composer Advisor Gary Kulesha, the artistic
staff and the musicians of the TSO. This two-year position includes opportunities to write
works for the full orchestra, to interact with international visiting composers and to
participate in the TSO’s extensive education programmes. Critical training in programme
planning, orchestra operations, marketing, public relations, education and development
activities will be provided to the Affiliate Composer to enhance understanding of a
professional orchestra. The Affiliate Composer will also have a role in promoting and
representing the work of the TSO. In addition to involvement in the New Creations
Festival, the Affiliate Composer will also have a role in promoting and advocating for the
creation and performance of Canadian and contemporary music. While no age
requirement is mandated, it is expected that this position will be filled by an emerging
composer who has already demonstrated substantial accomplishment in the Canadian
orchestral world.

Qualifications/Requirements:
 All applicants for the position of TSO Affiliate Composer must be Canadian citizens
or Permanent Residents.
 Although full-time residency in Toronto is not required, it is expected that the
Affiliate Composer be present in Toronto on a regular basis for committee meetings
and for all weeks in which contemporary works are performed including the New
Creations Festival plus for selected Educational programmes.
 Candidates should have completed their training.
 Excellent communication skills and the ability and desire to connect with audiences
to speak for the music and the orchestra are expected.
 Candidates should have experience working with professional orchestras; a
working knowledge of Canadian and international contemporary orchestral
repertoire is essential.
Applications must include:
1. Letter of interest (maximum one page) addressed to: The Search Committee
2. Full curriculum vitae (maximum 5 pages) which includes citizenship, contact
information, educational background plus three professional references with
contact information.
3. A complete list of compositions, including information about performances of works
past and future plus any discography or publications (if applicable).
4. Two scores and a link to download two recordings (Please do not send recordings
as attachments, only links will be accepted).
NOTE: The search committee will receive all applications for the position in confidence.
Audition process:
 The search committee will include Music Director Peter Oundjian, Composer
Advisor Gary Kulesha, representatives from the orchestra plus TSO Artistic staff.
 Applications must be submitted no later than: Friday, April 24, 2015 at 5pm to

 Live interviews for finalists will take place in Toronto during the week of June 22,
2015.
 The audition process will include an interview with the search committee and a
written exercise.
 Successful candidate will be notified the week of July 6, 2015 with a public
announcement to follow before the end of the season.
Terms of contract:
 September 2015 – June 2017
 This position is funded in part by the Canada Council with additional funding from
the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.
 Compensation will be discussed at the time the position is offered.
This position is currently known as the RBC Affiliate Composer as it is supported by the
RBC Foundation as part of the Emerging Artist Program.
If this program continues, the participant shall participate in activities relating to the RBC
Emerging Artist Project, including, but not limited to, speaking engagements at RBC
sponsored events at the TSO and outside events that showcase the RBC Foundation’s
Emerging Artist Project. It is understood that the participant will be an ambassador for
both the TSO and RBC at these events.

The RBC Resident Conductor position is funded in part by the RBC Emerging Artist Project.
