Wellness Terms and Formulas Acute Muscle Soreness Lactic acid and potassium build-up stimulating pain receptor during and after exercise Aerobic Using oxygen Anaerobic Not using oxygen Cardiac Output The amount of blood pumped by the heart Determined by; Stroke volume x heart rate Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness Occurs 1 to 5 days following unaccustomed or sever exercise Involves actual damage to the muscle Duration The time spent in a single exercise session Endurance The capacity to continue a physical performance over a long period of time Exercise Physical exertion of sufficient intensity, duration and frequency to achieve or maintain fitness, or other health or athletic objectives Exercise is a Planned Event!! Fatigue A loss of power to continue a given level of physical performance Frequency How often a person repeats a complete exercise session Heart Rate The heart’s rate of pumping Measured in Beats per Minute(bpm) Intensity The level of exertion during exercise. Measured in beats per minute (aerobic) or a percentage (weightlifting) Maximal Oxygen Uptake Is the maximal rate which oxygen can be taken up, distributed, and used by the body during physical activity Overload Subjecting a part of the body to efforts greater than it is accustomed to, in order to elicit a training response Power Speed and strength combined Work performed by unit of time : Work equals force times distance divided by time Progressive Resistance Exercise in which the amount of resistance is increased, to further stress the muscle, after it has become accustomed to handling a lesser resistance Set A group of repetitions of an exercise movement done consecutively, without rest, until a given number or fatigue is reached Strength The amount of muscular force that can be exerted Stroke Volume The quantity of blood ejected with each beat Training Heart Rate (THR) The heart rate at which one aim’s to exercise Also called Target Heart Rate
