Competitive Inhibitors Adam Asterito Mario Ciao Ilian DeCorte Brian Needles What is it ? • It is a protein that attaches to an enzyme at the active site, where the substrates would normally bind. • This protein has a similar shape of the substrate that binds to the enzyme, it will cause the enzyme to stop working (inhibit). • An inhibitor can be reversible if the concentration of the substrate is increased enough. Disulfiram • The drug inhibits aldehyde oxidase which causes the buildup of acetaldehyde that causes side-effects such as nausea and vomiting. – Helps people overcome alcoholisms • Occurs in the Sarin Gas • Sarin gas inhibits the muscle cells, specifically in your back inhibiting you nervous system from receiving oxygen. The Sarin molecules fit into the active site on an enzyme and keeps the oxygen molecules from reaching the enzyme. DDT Insecticide • Insecticide that effects ATPase activity – ATPase makes ATP from ADP • DDT is a competitive inhibitor that binds with the active site on ATPase, thus stopping the synthesis of ATP in the mitochondria in the body THE END
