SHOULD THE U.S. MILITARY PATROL THE Border? FANNY WU, CECILIA SUNG & ANGEL ZOU 802 MODERATOR “Should the U.S. Military patrol the border?” This question doesn’t have an exact answer. The tragedy of 9/11 has caused everyone to reconsider the thought. Many people think that the army should patrol the border. Others say that it isn’t the military’s job to patrol the border. It’s just a waste of money. A lot of people enter the U.S. from the Mexican border. They come from all over the world and we have no idea what they may bring into the U.S. They can bring drugs, bombs, guns and many things that we can be unaware of. PRO: • Every year thousands of illegal and counterfeit items enter the U.S. just by stepping over the border. • Over 178 million counterfeit brands were shipped illegally into the United States by crossing the border in 2011. • In 2012, over 329 million were brought into the United States as well. • After border patrol started, over 24, 792 seizures resulted if people trying to sneak counterfeit products. Pro (Cont’d) • In 1998, 278 million people, 86 million cars, 4 million trucks, and 2 million railroads were caught trying to smuggle in illegal drugs. • In July 2012, U.S military patrollers confiscated forty tons of marijuana that a drug dealer tried to bring to the United States by using an underground tunnel. Pro (Cont’d) • People do anything to get into the United States, even if it means getting into the country illegally. With just one step, they could cross the border and settle into the lower states like Arizona and Texas as if they’d been living there their whole life. • No one would know if they were a terrorist in action or not. No one would know if they had a deadly disease that could widespread and wipe out half of the population. CON: • A waste of money to hire more people and to make more weapons. • Soldiers should defend our country by fighting wars; not protecting the border. • Longer time to check in and out at the airport. • Big companies losing profits due to time when products are shipped into the sea ports. • Communication with family members from other countries can be difficult. • Many internet socializing networks might be banned. • Government adding more money into the national debt. • NOT THE ROLE FOR THE MILLITARY TO PARTOL THE BORDER
