TOBACCO: A plant with large leaves that are prepared for smoking, chewing or snuffing What is in tobacco smoke? Tobacco smoke has more than 4000 chemicals in it, including cyanide which is rat poison! At least 43 of them are known to cause cancer. Nicotine: A stimulant drug that speeds up the heartbeat. It causes addiction. Tar: A thick, dark liquid formed when tobacco burns. Tar coats the inside of the lungs and can cause disease. Carbon Monoxide: A poisonous gas produced when tobacco burns. This gas is also found in car exhaust. Why do young people smoke?? Want to fit in Trying to seem older Believe it won’t hurt their health Persuaded by advertising Effects on the body: Skin: makes you look older, causes skin to wrinkle. Fingers: smoking leaves the fingers yellow and stained. Mouth Teeth and Throat: Smoking causes bad breath and stains the teeth. Chemicals in the smoke can cause cancer of the throat and mouth. Lungs: Enough Said! Healthy Smokers Tar Heart Nicotine increases the heart rate and causes blood vessels to narrow. Narrow blood vessels makes the heart pump harder. This effort strains the heart and contributes to heart attacks. Brain: Nicotine is carried from the lungs to the brain in 7 seconds. It speeds up the way the body works. It also releases chemicals in the brain to cause the smoker to want more. Secondhand smoke: Tobacco smoke that is in the air and is inhaled by non-smokers. Just as dangerous if not more! Smokeless Tobacco: Not smoked like a cigarette. It is chewed and used as snuff. Snuff is finely ground tobacco that is held in the mouth. Leads to mouth cancer, loss of teeth, sores in stomach, stained teeth, and loss of sense of taste and smell. Smokeless Tobacco: No More Spitting!! Because of health risks, smokeless tobacco was banned from minor league baseball in 1993. Players, coaches, or managers caught would have to pay a fine.
