TOBACCO:
A plant with large leaves
that are prepared for
smoking, chewing or snuffing
What is in tobacco smoke?

Tobacco smoke has more
than 4000 chemicals in it,
including cyanide which is
rat poison! At least 43 of
them are known to cause
cancer.
Nicotine:
A stimulant drug
that speeds up the
heartbeat. It causes
addiction.

Tar:

A thick, dark liquid
formed when
tobacco burns. Tar
coats the inside of
the lungs and can
cause disease.
Carbon Monoxide:

A poisonous gas
produced when
tobacco burns.
This gas is also
found in car
exhaust.
Why do young people smoke??
Want to fit in
Trying to seem older
Believe it won’t hurt
their health
Persuaded by
advertising

Effects on the body:

causes skin to wrinkle.
Fingers: smoking leaves the
fingers yellow and stained.

Mouth Teeth and Throat:

Smoking causes bad
breath and stains
the teeth. Chemicals

throat and mouth.

Heart

Nicotine increases the heart
rate and causes blood vessels
to narrow. Narrow blood
vessels makes the heart pump
harder. This effort strains the
heart and contributes to heart
attacks.
Brain:

Nicotine is carried from
the lungs to the brain in
7 seconds. It speeds up
the way the body works.
It also releases chemicals
in the brain to cause the
smoker to want more.
Secondhand smoke:

Tobacco smoke
that is in the air
and is inhaled by
non-smokers. Just
as dangerous if
not more!
Smokeless Tobacco:




Not smoked like a cigarette.
It is chewed and used as
snuff.
Snuff is finely ground
tobacco that is held in the
mouth.
Leads to mouth cancer, loss
of teeth, sores in stomach,
stained teeth, and loss of
sense of taste and smell.
Smokeless Tobacco:
No More Spitting!!

Because of health risks, smokeless
tobacco was banned from minor
league baseball in 1993.
Players, coaches, or managers
caught would have to pay a fine.
