INTRODUCTION
Since the beginning of time, humans have
always developed that drive to travel.
In the early days people travel for some basic
needs like
FOOD
WATER
SAFETY
ACQUISITION OF RESOURCES
INTRODUCTION
Slowly, with the development in technology and further
advancement in transportation. E.g
The invention of wheels
Sail ships
This further improved the opportunities for
individuals to travel for education, sight seeing and for
religious purposes
NOTE: One of the earliest travel guides was written
by Pausanias, a Greek, which was a 10 volume Guide
to Greece, for Roman tourists in 170 A.D..
WHAT IS TOURISM?
Tourism is defined as a temporary movement of
people to destinations outside their normal places
of work and residence for purposes that are
relaxing, educative or religious (sightseeing).
Tourism can also be defined as the collection of
activities, services and industries that delivers a
travel experience.

TOURISM AND THE ECONOMY
In recent times, it is discovered that tourism has
greatly influenced the economy of so many countries
around the world. For example countries like France
and the United Arab Emirates have greatly been
affected by tourism over the years.
The World Tourism Organization (WTO) claims that
tourism is currently the worlds largest industry with
annual revenues of over $3 trillion dollars. Tourism
provides over six million jobs in the United States,
making it the country's largest employer

NEGATIVE IMPACT ON THE
ECONOMY
1. Jobs created by tourism are mainly seasonal jobs
and are poorly paid.
2. Tourism can push up local property prices and
cost of goods and services
3. Most of the money made from tourism does not
necessarily affect the local economy
