Effects of Alcohol!!
What is Alcohol???
Alcohol: A drug that is produced by a
chemical reaction in fruits, vegetables
and grains.
Short- Term Effects of Alcohol
(occurs within minutes of drinking alcohol)
Mouth: Alcohol is absorbed into mucus lining, tongue, gums, and throat.
Blood: 20% of alcohols absorbed through stomach into the bloodstream.
Too much alcohol may cause vomiting.
Small Intestine: The remaining alcohol moves to the small intestine
where it enters the bloodstream more slowly.
Heart: Alcohol causes the heart to beat faster; blood vessels widen,
which causes the body temperature to drop.
Brain: Alcohol reaches the brain within minutes. Alcohol lessens the
brains ability to move, speak, and effects vision. Brains cells are
destroyed.
Liver: The liver is responsible for filtering alcohol out of the blood
stream. If a person drinks alcohol faster than the liver filters it, they
will become intoxicated.
Kidneys: The kidneys work harder to convert alcohol to urine in order for
the body to remove the alcohol.
*Alcohol is removed from the body through carbon dioxide (breath vapor),
urine, and sweat.
Long-Term Effects of Alcohol
Brain: Destroys millions of brain cells. Unlike other body cells,
the brain cells cannot be replaced.
Liver: May develop Cirrhosis, which is scarring and destruction of
liver tissue. Cirrhosis can cause death.
Heart: Heavy drinking contributes to high blood pressure & may
damage the heart muscle. Can even cause heart failure by
putting strain on an already damaged heart.
Stomach: Alcohol increases the flow of gastric juices from
stomach lining. Large amounts of alcohol can cause more flows
of these juices damaging the lining, repeated irritation can
cause ulcers.

Effects of Alcohol on Teens!!
Alcohol damages the hippocampus, a part of your brain where
learning and memory take place. The hippocampus of a teen
who drinks heavily is about 10% smaller than a healthy teen’s
hippocampus.
Heavy drinking can make it harder to learn new things, remember
facts and perform physical tasks like playing basketball.
Alcohol can cause changes in feelings and emotions. Since young
people are still learning to deal with feelings, alcohol can lead
to friend problems, low self-esteem and stress.
The three leading causes of teen deaths are
Suicide
