South Australian Centre for Renewable Energy TAFE SA Regional Whyalla Campus BACKGROUND • • Growing community demand for solar and domestic wind turbine installation for Electrical Contractors has energized the establishment of a new training centre at TAFE SA Regional Whyalla Campus. In response to local industry demand and the Government’s commitment to environmental sustainability Whyalla Campus will be building and commissioning a new Centre for Renewable Energy to be completed end July 2012. EQUIPMENT • • • • • • Fixed roof mount solar PV systems Tracking solar PV system Grid connected wind turbine system (Skystream) HybridGEN (variable speed DC generator) Battery bank and bi-directional grid forming inverters State of the art live monitoring system ROOF MODULES Corrugated Roof T-Deck Flat Roof Tiled Roof TEACHING • • • • • • Students will complete competencies from the UEE22107 National Qualifications with competencies specifically selected to provide training in new and emerging clean technologies and services Outcome for students will be the: Certificate 2 in Sustainable Energy/Career start (Prevocational/pre apprenticeship course linked with Electrical) Certificate 2 in Renewable Energy Certificate 4 in Electrical Certificate 4 in Renewable Energy UNITS OF COMPETENCY • • • • • • • • • • • • Apply OHS practices in the workplace Solve problems in extra-low voltage single path circuits Solve problems in multiple path dc. circuits Provide basic sustainable energy solutions for energy reduction in domestic premises Apply sustainable energy practices in daily activities Promote sustainable energy practice in the community Use basic computer applications relevant to a workplace Dismantle, assemble and fabricate electro-technology components Use drawings, diagrams, schedules and manuals Lay wiring/cabling and terminate accessories for extra-low voltage circuits Fix and secure equipment Safe working at heights RENEWABLE ENERGY MONITORING SYSTEM • • • • • Unique use in TAFE Web based and can be accessed by other computers on the network It can access devices remotely using Modbus TCP/IP over their network ie: if they wish to monitor another campus, it is easy to implement Multiple students can access at the same time Logged data can be extracted into Excel or CSV format for detailed analysis ie: solar irradiation and power output of the inverters. Comparison chart of Wind System energy generation Comparison chart of Solar PV System energy generation OUTCOMES • • Computer technology allows students to monitor the power generated daily in varying weather conditions. Site development will prove to be a valuable learning experience for all students that are involved and will play an important part of the hands-on component of the course.
