Beyond NCI Designation: The Quest Continues Roy A. Jensen, M.D. Director Our Vision • Seeking new treatment advances through the eyes of our patients • Provide state-of-the-art cancer research, prevention and healthcare programs • Enhance care at both the community and national level • Excel in the discovery and advancement of new cancer therapies to the clinic and • Measurably reduce the burden of cancer in our region Resulting in The University of Kansas Cancer Center being designated as an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center Cancer: Current State • 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. • Cancer has surpassed heart disease as the leading cause of death in Kansas and Missouri • 1 in 3 cancer patients do not survive more than 5 years Only an elite few earn National Cancer Institute (NCI) designation. • 68 from more than 5,000 evaluated • The top 1.3% of cancer centers • 70% of all funding from the National Cancer Institute is awarded to these designated centers What NCI Designation Means • Patient survival rates are 25% better at NCIdesignated cancer centers. • Patients have access to clinical trials only available at NCIdesignated facilities. • Recognized for scientific excellence • Discovery and development of more effective approaches to cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment. • Nearly every new cancer drug of the past decade has been based on research conducted at an NCI-designated facility. • Scientists can now apply for research funding only available to NCIdesignated cancer centers. What Does NCI Designation Mean to Us? • 89.5% of patients stay in Kansas for their cancer care, an improvement of 1.5% over the last two years. • KUCC has seen a 400% increase in the number of patients participating in clinical trials since 2004. • Over 6,200 new patients are seen each year at The University of Kansas Cancer Center. • More than 40,000 unique patients visit KU Cancer Center each year. The impact cannot be overstated • Total regional economic impact = $2.62 billion* • Total jobs created = 3,672* • KUCC has received 121 new research grants for nearly $80 Million dollars over the last two years *Combined totals reflect actuals 2007-2014 and projected 2015-2018. Access to promising treatments at KU Clinical Research Center • State-of-the-art phase I trials • 82,400-sq.-ft. facility • Funded by JCERT 1/8 cent sales tax, $5M/yr. • Donation by Hall Family Foundation A TEAM of specialists develops a tailored treatment plan for each patient. Our Approach • Using the best technology, treatment is tailored to each patient’s unique needs based on genetic, cellular and immunological information. • This custom cancer therapy pinpoints an exact diagnosis, which results in patient-specific surgery, radiation or chemotherapy. • Partnership with IBM Watson to develop treatments tailored to each individual patient. We use the latest technologies for earlier diagnosis and treatment. • Photopheresis • 3D breast tomosynthesis/ABUS • Low-dose lung CT scanner • TrueBeamTM linear accelerator • Radioactive breast seed localization • Immunotherapy Navigating Your Care From initial diagnosis until a treatment plan is established, our nurse navigators guide patients through initial testing and appointments, answering questions and providing emotional support every step of the way. The nurse navigator remains an additional resource throughout the patient’s cancer journey. We continue our efforts in providing the gold standard in research and care. 29th U.S. News Best Hospital Reputation RatingTop 10 Cancer Hospitals Hospital MD Anderson Sloan Kettering Brigham & Women Johns Hopkins Mayo Mass General University of Washington Stanford UCSF Cleveland Clinic Univ. of Kansas Reputation Score 67.7 62.0 36.5 33.5 32.2 17.6 14.5 13.1 12.4 9.9 2.3 Cancer: What are we facing? • Over the next 10 years – the incidence of cancer will increase by 45-50%. • There are currently 21,000 new cancer cases in the State of Kansas and surrounding Missouri counties, each year. • In 2024, this will increase to approximately 29,000 new cancer cases. The University of Kansas Cancer Center is up for the challenge • NCI Designation was only the first step in our journey to becoming one of the top cancer centers across the U.S. - the next step is Comprehensive Designation. • Of the 68 NCI designated cancer centers, only 41 have achieved comprehensive designation. The Quest Continues… Comprehensive designation will allow us to: • • • Expand research and drug discovery capabilities Recruit best physician-scientists Focus resources on population-based health Enhance cancer prevention Improve early detection and screening Extend access to high-risk and underserved populations Plans to reach our goals: critical funding needs Research & Education • • • Recruit Physician Scientists Enhance Drug Discovery and Development Pilot Innovative, Disease-Specific Projects Clinical Care • • • • Recruit Genetics Counselors Expand Nurse Navigation Program Develop Inclusive Survivorship Program Cellular Therapeutics Unprecedented community support in Kansas and Missouri Topeka Lee’s Summit Overland Park Kansas City, KS Kansas City, MO Together, we will make this happen.
