Sub-Metering: Granularity to Appliance Level Copyright © 2014 2D2C, Inc. All rights reserved. Go to www.2D2C.com. Granular Sub-Metering System Architecture Database, Analytics & User Interface Ethernet Switch Wireless radio to Ethernet gateways … Plug-load meters … Wired-load monitors for Lighting for Motors ID tags for plugs for Heaters Plug Load Metering • Monitoring at each receptacle independently • Radio or Power Line communication • Receptacle address AND appliance address needed for accurate measurements • Often combined with control (ASHRAE, IgCC, Ca Title 24) • Current tap or in-wall Why RFID appliance tags? • • • • Provides plug load with a unique address at a low cost for 100% accurate appliance sub-metering and control Contains overload trip levels between 0.33A/40W and 15A/1875W Writeable - kWh accumulation written to tag Simple, intuitive technology for DIY installation 1056 2.0A 250W Copyright © 2014 2D2C, Inc. What do the RFID tags do? • Unique Plug Identification – Identifies where each appliance is plugged in, and when unplugged from receptacle – Measure energy, monitor assets, accurately control new and legacy equipment • Energy Usage – Stores accumulated kWh as redundant data backup (receptacle also has long-range radio communication of meter measurements) • Protection – Identifies the current rating of each appliance for overload protection – Protection from electrocution - power relay is normally OFF and requires either manual operation (key fob) or RFID appliance tag to turn power on at each individual receptacle – Equipment protection from lightning strikes, power surges and brown conditions – Blackout recovery protection that ensures the power is stable for 15 seconds before allowing outlets to power ON. Also eliminates excess inrush demand by staggering restart. Copyright © 2014 2D2C, Inc. All rights reserved. Go to www.2D2C.com. What can you do with the data from SafePlug? Name each receptacle & outlet end point Name each appliance View energy usage data by appliance regardless of location Accurately schedule when appliances operate regardless of location Accurately shed loads Track everything! … Ethernet Switch ZigBee Gateway SafePlug ZigBee receptacles provide safety, appliance protection, plug-load monitoring and control SafePlug RFID tags for each appliance let’s you create protection and custom identification for each appliance Copyright © 2014 2D2C, Inc. Example of UC Davis Home SafePlug Appliance Data “The ultimate two for one: Appliance specific energy data with integrated appliance protection!” - Dallas Swindle, DS Design Group Copyright © 2014 2D2C, Inc. All rights reserved. Go to www.2D2C.com. Example of UC Davis Home SafePlug Appliance Data Goal of the study was to balance solar generation & battery storage with intelligent monitoring and appliance load shedding Appliance data from SafePlug (Watts, Amps, Volts) UC Davis is able to monitor all plug loads in real time. Intelligent load shedding is only possible when every appliance is accurately measured and can be controlled, regardless of location. 100% Customer engagement: RFID Tagging means that only approved appliances consume energy. Control strategy is no longer reliant on appliance location. Phantom power is easily monitored and eliminated. Protection for all appliances during surges, spikes, sags and bad power. Intelligent blackout recovery: balanced start-up after black-out/low power conditions eases inrush demand. Prioritization: Appliance grouping and prioritization is only possible with SafePlug. All rights reserved. Go to www.2D2C.com. Benefits of Plug-Load Metering with Plug ID Reader • Measure appliance energy usage in real time for accurate baselining – Display exactly what equipment is running and how much energy is being consumed • Prioritize electrical loads into Critical (“never turn off”) and Non-Critical groups • Implement control scenes to shed loads for minutes or hours • Schedule when appliances can operate – Eliminate phantom power consumption – Perform precise peak energy reductions (blackout, DR, TOU pricing) • Track and Monitor assets – Identify what is plugged in, when it is present, where it is located and if it is actually using energy. • Protect expensive equipment, coworkers and/or family members from hazardous fault conditions.
